Discover Heigenbrücken: Trails, geology and winter activities
Accommodation in Heigenbrücken
Heigenbrücken combines a network of trails with themed routes, a named sandstone formation and seasonal activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Heigenbrücken, you can plan your trip around whether you are particularly interested in hiking themes, local history or winter activities. For travel by train, the Regional Express stop on the Frankfurt–Würzburg line is a useful reference point; check the timetable for your travel date.
Trails with different themes
The free GlücksWEG educational adventure trail features 28 selected quotations on information boards, illustrated with self-designed images and photographs. Martin-Niels Däfler created the trail in 2013 together with the “Neue Talente” youth group. The quotations and images give the GlücksWEG a clear thematic focus.
The KommunikationsWALD is a 4.1-kilometre circular trail that starts right at Heigenbrücken station. Its length and circular route provide a clear point of reference; the GlücksWEG, by contrast, focuses on quotations and illustrated boards. The “Spessartweg 2” quality trail adds another themed route to the network around Heigenbrücken.
Cultural history is also part of a route: the “Die Heigenbrückener Formation” cultural trail starts opposite the town hall and passes by Bächlesgrund. Until the first quarter of the 16th century, glassmakers held Pentecost gatherings there. The trail thus connects a specific local area with a historical theme.
Sandstone and protected landscapes
Heigenbrücken Sandstone is a geological section of the Lower Buntsandstein, now known as the Calvörde Formation. Stones from this sequence have been quarried in Heigenbrücken since the mid-19th century. Its geological classification and its documented use offer two different ways to explore the local sandstone.
The “Spessartwiesen” nature reserve begins right next to the Heigenbrücken natural swimming pool. The protected area also includes large parts of the Lohrbach Valley around Heigenbrücken, as well as areas along its side valleys. It is therefore located both right beside the natural swimming pool and within a wider landscape.
Activities by season
At the Spessart climbing forest, there is a zip-line course more than 600 metres long, known as the Flying Fox. This gives visitors another type of activity in addition to the trails. In winter, skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing are available at Winterloch or Engländer. Check current conditions for seasonal activities before making plans.
Getting there and practical information
The Regional Express stop is on the Frankfurt–Würzburg railway line. For specific travel plans, check the timetable for your travel date. If you are travelling by e-bike, you will find two free charging stations in Heigenbrücken: one at the “Zur frischen Quelle” inn in the town centre and one near the kiosk or toilets at the wildlife park.
Hiking in the wider Main-Spessart destination
Across the wider Main-Spessart destination, the Spessart Nature Park offers everything from short walks to multi-day hikes. The Main Cycle and Hiking Trail is on a different scale: it is around 500 kilometres long, with just under 100 kilometres running through the Main-Spessart district and connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. This makes it possible to distinguish Heigenbrücken’s local trail network from the wider range of hiking opportunities in Main-Spessart.
