Heimbuchenthal: Cultural Trail, Elsava and Spessart
Accommodation in Heimbuchenthal
Heimbuchenthal lies in the upper Elsava Valley, in the heart of the Spessart Nature Park. The European Cultural Trail “Between Heaven & Hell” and the walking and leisure opportunities along the Elsava highlight different sides of the village. Cultural history, landscape and outdoor activities each offer a distinct focus for your stay.
Cultural Trail and Historic Sites
The European Cultural Trail “Between Heaven & Hell” starts at the old railway station in Heimbuchenthal. A 5 km loop runs from St. Martin’s Church to the “Lady of the Mountains” Chapel. Another loop leads from the old railway station to Höllhammer and Heimathenhof and is 6 km long. The endpoints give the routes different points of reference: one links the church and chapel, the other the railway station, Höllhammer and Heimathenhof.
Höllhammer is a historic industrial monument associated with a self-sufficient ironworks village established in the 18th century under the direction of the Rexroth family. The Cultural Trail also passes the Kernsmühle mill. Reconstructed historic irrigation systems can be seen along the route. In addition to the places mentioned, the trail therefore also explores historic industry and water technology.
The 1.5 km Wiesenweg runs between the two endpoints of the European Cultural Trail. The 5 km loop is 1 km shorter than the 6 km loop; at 1.5 km, the Wiesenweg is shorter than both. This makes it easy to compare the stated route lengths directly.
The Elsava, Kurpark Lake and Outdoor Activities
A footpath and cycle path runs along the Elsava in Heimbuchenthal. The Kurpark Lake is also part of the local landscape; it has a barefoot trail. The riverside path and the lake are two specific points of reference when exploring the village’s landscape and leisure opportunities.
There are three Nordic walking trails around Heimbuchenthal. You can also explore designated mountain bike trails. The range of sports and leisure activities also includes Spessart Trail 1 and Spessart Trail 2. The information thus covers both specific activities and two named trails. In the wider travel destination of Aschaffenburg, separate regional routes run through the area: the Main Cycle Route follows the Main Valley in the Aschaffenburg district, while the Kahl-Spessart Cycle Route passes through the landscapes of the Aschaffenburg district. Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 also pass through the district; they have already been awarded the “Quality Trail Hikable Germany” certification four times.
If you’re exploring leisure options, the motorhome parking area on the Elsava is another useful point of reference. The “Pedalwelt” experience exhibition, with its fun course and soccer pitch, is nearby. A miniature golf course and an adventure golf course are also easily accessible on foot from the parking area.
Beaver activity is another natural feature to look out for along the Elsava. In recent years, it has been observed more frequently on the stretch between Leitwiese in Mespelbrunn and Millionenweg in Heimbuchenthal. These observations relate to this stretch of the river.
