Lohr a.Main brings together several themes that may influence your choice of destination: a listed castle complex, museums about the history of the Spessart and opportunities for cycling along the Main. There are also recurring cultural events and seasonal activities. This allows you to balance your interests in city history, nature and outdoor activities when planning your stay.

Old Town, Castle and Lohr’s History

The listed Kurmainzer Schloss castle complex in Lohr a.Main has four towers. Every year on Good Friday, the Lohr Good Friday procession also passes through Lohr’s Old Town. It begins at St. Michael’s Church and depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ with 13 life-size groups of figures. The procession was first mentioned in a document in 1658; in March 2026, it was added to the Bavarian State Directory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Another trace of the town’s history leads to Maria Sophia Margaretha Catharina von Erthal: she was born at Lohr Castle in 1725 and is considered a possible historical model for Snow White. The story is also featured at the Spessart Museum, where Snow White and the famous mirror are among the subjects explored. The possible connection remains a historical interpretation, not a confirmed identification.

One of the most striking viewpoints is the Bayersturm tower, which offers views across Lohr’s Old Town and the Main and as far as the Spessart. The Wöhrde, a cultural landscape near the town of Lohr a.Main, offers a different perspective. It comprises wet meadows, tall-herb vegetation, springs, ponds, orchards and the Lohr River. The listed Fishermen’s Quarter is another historic district that adds a distinctive focus to the Old Town.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

Housed in the former castle of the Counts of Rieneck and the Prince-Electors of Mainz, the Spessart Museum presents the cultural history of one of Germany’s largest forest regions across more than 2,000 square metres. Its motto is “People and Forest.” The subjects range from the Spessart and its history to the people who shaped it; the Lohr Snow White story and the famous mirror are also included.

If you are interested in other aspects of history, the Lohr School Museum and the Insulator Museum each offer their own perspective. The School Museum brings the history of schooling in the past century to life through historic classrooms and old teaching materials. The Insulator Museum displays a collection of insulators from around the world in a former transformer hut. The collections therefore differ considerably, spanning learning and education, technical objects and the cultural history of a forest region.

At the Spessart Museum, the Lohr Snow White character hosts a story hour at 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from April to October. If this event fits your plans, take the day of the week, season and time into account when planning your museum visit.

Cycling Tours Along the Main and in the Bikewald

Lohr a.Main lies on the Main Cycle Route and is a suitable starting point for a ride along this long-distance cycle route. Another option is Bikewald Spessart’s Bike Area 1. It has forest and country tracks of varying difficulty that are mostly easy to ride, with options for mountain bikers, touring cyclists and e-bikers. The two options help you choose your focus: the Main Cycle Route is suited to a long-distance ride, while the bike area offers different difficulty levels and several types of cycling.

If you would rather combine your activities with a seasonal offering on the water, the Maintal-Bummler runs sightseeing cruises from the Lohr Main riverfront between the two Main bridges from April to the end of October. Lohr’s local swimming facilities include the Main-Spessart-Bad. It has a heated 50-metre swimming pool, a large non-swimmer pool, an 89-metre giant water slide and a diving tower with platforms up to five metres high.

Getting There and Routes to the Museum

Trains from Aschaffenburg or WĂĽrzburg depart hourly from Lohr a.Main station. Check the current timetable before travelling. To get to the Spessart Museum, the Lohrliner on routes B and E connects the station with Lohr central bus station (ZOB); the museum is a five-minute walk from the ZOB. This information can help you combine your journey with a museum visit.

Main-Spessart in the Regional Context

The Main Hiking Trail is another regional reference point within the wider Main-Spessart destination: it is around 500 kilometres long. Just under 100 kilometres of it run through the district of Main-Spessart, connecting Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The cycle network in Main-Spessart is also shaped by long-distance cycle routes in Lower Franconia, running through the Main and Wern valleys and along the Sinn and Franconian Saale rivers.
