Sailauf offers signposted hiking trails, a natural stream landscape and historic church sites. Extensive traditional orchards and a geological discovery site also shape the area’s character. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of activities: hiking the trails, observing nature or exploring the community’s history.

Hiking around Sailauf

There are twelve hiking routes around Sailauf. The numbered trails are signposted and can be walked in either direction. The number of routes and the fact that they can be walked both ways are useful points of reference when planning your outing. The hiking routes around Sailauf can be reached by regularly scheduled public transport from Hösbach station or Aschaffenburg, both in the surrounding area. Include these connections in your plans for getting there and back, and check the current timetable before you travel.

Stream landscape, traditional orchards and geology

Below the village, the Sailauf stream flows through a natural landscape, winding through numerous meanders. There are also pronounced slip-off and undercut slopes. These terms describe different bank forms along the bends of a river and give the landscape a distinct character. The stream’s winding course is therefore as much a part of Sailauf’s natural scenery as the slopes along its banks.

Sailauf also has extensive traditional orchards. In spring, the characteristic laughter-like call of the green woodpecker can be heard in the orchards. This is a distinctive seasonal nature experience: rather than a general impression of nature, the focus is on a specific sound. Geology is also part of the area’s character. The rare mineral “Sailaufite” was discovered at the Hartkoppe quarry.

Churches and history

St Vitus Church and the cemetery in Sailauf date back to the 11th century. The late Baroque complex of the present-day church dates to 1789; it is probably the fourth church to stand on this site. This brings together a long ecclesiastical history and the later form of the present-day church in one place.

The forest chapel also has its own historical context: built in 1785, it belonged to a hermitage. From 1730, monks there taught children from Rottenberg and the wider Sailauf parish as school hermits. The church, chapel and hermitage thus represent different aspects of local history, from a religious site to the education provided by the school hermits.

More to explore in the wider Main-Spessart destination

The wider Main-Spessart destination offers additional hiking and cultural attractions. The Main Cycle and Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; almost 100 kilometres of it run through Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. Another destination is Karlstadt’s old town: founded around 1200, its buildings and structures have been preserved for more than seven centuries. Walls, towers and gates define the townscape.

The Museum Papiermühle Homburg offers another perspective on the region. It preserves fully and authentically intact production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the paper-making family’s living quarters and a demonstration workshop. Fine handmade paper is still produced there in a fifth-generation hand papermaking workshop. These examples broaden the picture of the wider Main-Spessart destination; in Sailauf itself, the focus is on the local hiking trails, stream landscape and church sites.
