Schollbrunn: Nature and trails

In Schollbrunn, you can choose between observing nature, circular hikes, and historical and cultural sites. The wildlife park is open year-round and free to enter. Nevertheless, check the access information again before setting out. In the enclosures, you can observe mouflons up close; the park is also known for its red deer population.

Scholli’s Nature Trail features information boards, a photo wall, play stations, and a race comparing forest animals. The forest playground and wildlife enclosure are considered attractions for children. One of Schollbrunn’s wildlife enclosures is home to fallow deer and wild boar; animal populations may change.

All circular trails around Schollbrunn start at the car park behind the wayside chapel on the road toward Rohrbrunn. If you are planning a loop, this starting point is a useful landmark. Check the parking situation before setting out as well.

Hiking with different focuses

The “South of the ‘Äppeläquator’” cultural circular trail starts in Schollbrunn and is approximately 14 kilometres long. From there, it leads via Markus Chapel to Grünau Charterhouse, runs through the Kropfbach Valley, and reaches the Hasenstab Cross. The route thus links several named sites and landscape features on a longer loop.

Grünau Charterhouse was a monastery that was dissolved in 1803 and is a destination on a route from Schollbrunn. Another trail offers a different historical and cultural focus, leading to an old iron hammer mill, described as a 250-year-old smithy. Schollbrunn’s hiking trails also lead into the landscapes of Spessart Nature Park.

The trails therefore differ in their stated destinations: the approximately 14-kilometre loop passes Markus Chapel and Grünau Charterhouse before reaching the Hasenstab Cross; the historical trail draws attention to the iron hammer mill. When planning, you can first choose based on trail length and theme.

Church and getting there

The Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Schollbrunn is Neo-Gothic and dates from 1896. It is also possible to visit Martin Luther Church inside; confirm access before your trip.

You can reach Schollbrunn by car via the A3 and the Rohrbrunn exit, which is 8 kilometres away. This allows you to combine planning your journey with finding the starting point of the circular trails. Check the current route and parking situation before setting out.

More topics in the wider Main-Spessart destination

If you want to explore destinations beyond Schollbrunn, the wider Main-Spessart destination offers different scales and themes. The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through the Main-Spessart district, linking Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels, and Marktheidenfeld. This is a regional hiking route and differs considerably in scale from Schollbrunn’s approximately 14-kilometre loop.

Main-Spessart also offers distinctive cultural examples: in Aschfeld, the historic fortified church is a 15th-century refuge and defensive castle. Parts of its fortifications are now used as museum rooms, where a collection displays old defensive weapons as well as rural life and work. At Homburg Paper Mill, a hand-papermaking workshop in its fifth generation still produces fine handmade paper today.
