Wiesthal between glassmaking history and a cultural trail
Accommodation in Wiesthal
Wiesthal combines a glassmaking history, historic buildings and a mill with trails and leisure activities. This offers different perspectives for planning a trip: you can get to know the town through its history or plan your stay around the trails and their stops. The railway station is another point of reference for identifying Wiesthal as a travel destination.
Getting to and finding your way around Wiesthal
Wiesthal railway station is on the Frankfurt am Main–Würzburg railway line. From the station, it is about a 200 m walk to stop 6 on the Nature Adventure Trail. This makes it easy to link your journey with a specific point on the trail. For your trip, it is best to check the timetable for the day you plan to travel.
Glassmaking history and local history
Wiesthal lies in the Hochspessart and is a glassmaking town; Krommenthal is one of its districts. Wiesthal and Habichsthal are former glassmakers’ settlements that were established in the late Middle Ages. In the 16th century, glass production and trade brought economic growth and prosperity to Wiesthal. The chronology provides a thread through the town’s history: from its medieval settlement beginnings to a later period when production and trade shaped its prosperity.
The Ruh- or Mühlhansenmühle mill is another historic point of interest. It is the only mill still standing in Wiesthal today, and adds the history of milling to that of glass production. The Catholic parish church of St. Andreas in Wiesthal was built in 1599/1600. Together, the mill and church offer further points of interest for a stay that is not focused solely on the history of glass.
European Cultural Route and Nature Adventure Trail
The European Cultural Route “Habichsthal – Wiesenthal and Götz von Berlichingen” is about nine kilometres long and has five informative stops. The circular route leads from Wiesthal at mid-slope to Habichsthal and finishes by passing through Hockenruhe, a district of Wiesthal. The route’s length, number of stops and course each provide a different point of reference: the approximate length gives you an idea of the scale of the circuit, while the five stops indicate its information points. The route description also shows which places and districts are included.
The Nature Adventure Trail offers a different focus. Stop 5 is about how a historic irrigation meadow works, which you can experience in a playful way using a hand pump. This activity is available during the warmer months. If this particular experience is important to your plans, check in advance whether it will be available when you visit. Stop 6 provides another specific point of reference: it is about a 200 m walk from the railway station.
More leisure activities
Leisure activities in Wiesthal also include a water-treading facility and mountain bike trails. They complement the historic points of interest and the two trails with more options for your stay. When planning, you can consider whether to focus mainly on local history, the cultural route, the Nature Adventure Trail or other leisure activities. For choosing a specific mountain bike tour, the information about each route will be useful.
