Burgbernheim: Hiking, Orchards and History
Accommodation in Burgbernheim
Burgbernheim offers plenty to explore for visitors interested in hiking, traditional orchards and local history. Those interested in trails and landscapes will find marked hiking and cycling routes, while guided tours of the traditional orchards and historic sites offer further highlights.
Hiking and Cycling Around Burgbernheim
The European Continental Divide Trail runs through Burgbernheim and crosses points from which water flows both to the Black Sea and to the North Sea. This makes a geographical feature the focus of the route. The traditional orchard nature trail shares information about the ecologically valuable traditional orchard habitat and offers views across the Frankenhöhe and into the Aisch Valley.
There are 75 kilometres of marked, well-maintained hiking trails around Burgbernheim, with rest areas and benches. Burgbernheim also has seven marked Nordic walking routes of varying difficulty. The options therefore differ in several ways, including whether you are interested in a nature-themed educational trail or routes with different levels of difficulty.
There are marked cycling routes, too: for example, they lead from Burgbernheim to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Bad Windsheim. These destinations give you an idea of where the cycle routes go; when planning your trip, you can distinguish these routes from the hiking options.
Traditional Orchards and Their Products
Bernatura is a traditional orchard visitor centre in Burgbernheim. It encourages interest in locally grown orchard fruit and shares knowledge about this habitat. Bernatura also offers special guided orchard tours and walks through the Burgbernheim traditional orchards. The route, duration and topics can be arranged individually.
The BERNATURA shop sells products made from traditional orchard fruit. These include fruit spreads, juices, Secco, plum beer, pralines, vinegars, oils and herb salt. The range may change; if you plan to visit for a particular product, it is best to check the current selection in advance.
Fortified Church, Museum and Local History
Burgbernheim’s fortified church was probably built under Margrave rule in the mid-15th century. Of the original double encircling walls and four corner towers, only the northeast tower, the “Seilersturm,” remains today. The tentative dating and the surviving tower tell different parts of the site’s story: its presumed period of construction and what remains of its former appearance.
Burgbernheim is also home to a clock museum with many unusual exhibits. Check the current visitor access arrangements before your visit. The area around Burgbernheim’s Hirschteich (Deer Pond) also has historical significance: according to the oldest maps, it is considered the source area of the Altmühl.
