Ippesheim: Wine, Trails and “Ippsi”
Accommodation in Ippesheim
There are three themes to consider when planning a trip to Ippesheim: winegrowing, hiking and the reconstruction of “Ippsi’s” burial. Each offers a different starting point for planning: you can learn about the grape varieties grown here, choose a hike based on its duration and direction, or enquire in advance about viewing the finds.
Winegrowing and hiking
The Bullenheimer Berg is home to the only grape-variety trail in Middle Franconia. It provides detailed information about the grape varieties grown here. Bullenheim is part of the market town of Ippesheim. For visitors who want to learn about winegrowing through more than just a tasting, the trail offers a way to explore the subject: the grape varieties themselves take centre stage, while local winemakers and seasonal wine taverns offer wines made from locally grown grapes.
The hiking trails start in Ippesheim at Lichtenstein Castle and take about one to three hours, depending on your stamina. They lead through the countryside and vineyards, along the Iff from mill to mill, or uphill to Frankenberg. This gives you an approximate time frame and a choice of different kinds of route: you can consider the time available alongside your interest in vineyards, the river or a climb.
At local wineries and seasonal wine taverns, you can taste wines made from locally grown grapes. Opening times vary by business and season. If you want to make a wine tasting a fixed part of your plans, ask the winery about the best time to visit; this will help you take seasonal variations into account when choosing a date.
“Ippsi” at Ippesheim Castle
A reconstruction of “Ippsi’s” burial, along with other finds, can be viewed at Ippesheim Castle; you must contact the municipal office in advance to arrange a visit. This cultural attraction adds an archaeological perspective to the wine and hiking activities.
In the wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination
The Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly well suited to exploring on foot or by bike. Its cycle network includes themed routes for a range of abilities, from leisurely rides to more strenuous cycling. Another way to explore the region is the “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycle route, which is just under 100 kilometres long. It crosses the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The regional options therefore differ both in length and in character, ranging from themed routes to a longer connection between two cities.
The wider destination also includes cultural and historical attractions in Bad Windsheim and Neustadt an der Aisch. At the Franconian Open Air Museum in Bad Windsheim is the Bauhofstadel, built between 1441 and 1444. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supporting pillars. At the Aischgrund Carp Museum in Neustadt an der Aisch, you can learn all about the more than 1,250-year tradition of carp farming across ten rooms. The two attractions offer different points of interest: a medieval roof structure at one, and the long tradition of carp farming at the other.
