Old Town, Way of St. James and castle

The Steigerwald Way of St. James passes through Scheinfeld and by Schwarzenberg Monastery. Since mid-2026, the town of Scheinfeld has offered professionally guided tours of the historic Old Town. Lasting around 1.5 hours, they lead from the Upper Gate Tower along the main street to the Catholic parish church. Tour schedules may vary.

A four-row avenue of lime trees was planted as early as the 17th century along the connecting route from the Upper Town Gate to Schwarzenberg Castle. It is a historic feature along the route to the castle. Tours of Schwarzenberg Castle are regularly offered from Easter to October; on Sundays and public holidays, a tour of the Upper Castle is possible. Since tours may be cancelled at short notice, check the visitor information for your preferred date.

The monastery church and the history of the House of Schwarzenberg

Schwarzenberg Monastery Church was consecrated in 1735, based on plans by Würzburg master builder Balthasar Neumann. Pilgrimages to the miraculous image began in 1745: that year, the image was transferred from the original wooden chapel to the altar of the Chapel of Grace. The dates mark different milestones in the monastery’s religious history—the consecration of the church and the beginning of the pilgrimage.

Another striking structure is the 46-metre-high Black Tower. It was built as a landmark to commemorate the House of Schwarzenberg’s elevation to the hereditary rank of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.

Swimming pools and seasonal planning

The swimming facilities in Scheinfeld include an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, and are also open to guests and visitors. Both are open seasonally; the water temperature is at least 27°C throughout the year. For planning purposes, it is therefore important to consider these details separately: the temperature applies year-round, while the pools are open seasonally. The wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim offers a broader perspective on nature, cycling and culture. The district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly well suited to exploring on foot or by bike. The nearly 100-kilometre-long long-distance cycle route “from the Main to the Zenn” runs through the district, connecting Kitzingen with Fürth. The district-wide cycle network offers themed routes for leisurely rides and more challenging cycling.

The Bauhofstadel at the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim is a highlight of architectural history: it was built between 1441 and 1444, and its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supports. Another regional specialty is AischgrĂĽnder mirror carp. In Neustadt an der Aisch, it is one of the local specialties and is served from September to April, including baked until crisp or cooked in a seasoned broth.
