Discover Scheßlitz
Accommodation in Scheßlitz
Scheßlitz lies at the entrance to Franconian Switzerland, between Bamberg and Bayreuth and at the foot of Giechburg and Gügel. Giechburg towers 530 m above Scheßlitz. Juniper slopes and calcareous sinter streams shape the landscape; they are among the characteristic features of Franconian Switzerland. This gives you two different starting points for planning your trip: a striking landmark above the town and the landscape features of the surrounding natural area.
Hiking and cycling on routes of different lengths
In autumn 2015, nine hiking trails of varying lengths were designated within the municipality of Scheßlitz. Scheßlitz Hiking Route A is about 9.8 km long and passes Gügel, Giechburg and the Jewish cemetery. This route lets you plan both the approximate distance and the named stops. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Maintal-Leinleitertal Cycle Path runs through Scheßlitz on its 50 km route from Staffelstein to Ebermannstadt. The 50 km refers to the entire route, not just the section in Scheßlitz. This offers two distinct perspectives on distance: Route A is a single hiking route of about 9.8 km with named stops, while the cycle path places the town along a longer route between two endpoints.
Town walk and buildings
A walk around Scheßlitz introduces selected buildings and offers an independent way to explore the town. East of Giechburg, the Catholic branch and pilgrimage church of St. Pankratius, also known as Gügelkirche, stands on a steep rock; it is about a quarter of an hour’s walk from the castle. Exploring the area therefore brings together different spatial connections: selected buildings in the town and a church east of Giechburg.
Cultural events can also shape your stay: for several years, the Franconian Switzerland Theatre Summer has presented guest performances in Scheßlitz. Which performances are scheduled during your visit depends on the programme at the time. Check the dates if a performance is important to your plans.
Culture in the wider Bamberg destination
In the wider Bamberg destination, Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden and Ebrach Abbey are other cultural heritage highlights. Weissenstein Palace is one of Germany’s largest Baroque complexes; its extensive gallery includes art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer extensively transformed the Ebrach monastic complex into a palace-like Baroque complex. The Gothic church and its rose window were preserved. Since 2004, the Museum of the History of Ebrach has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery and covers the history of both the market town and the monastery.
There are also other nature and food-related highlights in the wider Bamberg destination. Seven themed food tours explore the Bamberg region: three cycling tours and four hiking routes lead to floodplain landscapes, viewpoints, places to stop for refreshments and local producers. Check the current tour options if you plan to take one. The Methuselah Tour around Ebrach passes through the Spitzenberg Nature Reserve to trees that are up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick.
