Krummennaab lies between Steinwald Nature Park and the Waldnaab Valley. When choosing where to stay, you can consider the different themes of the municipality: swimming at Erlenweiher, exploring paths on foot or by bike, and visiting historic churches and castle ruins. If you are looking for hotels in Krummennaab, you can first decide whether your main focus is a day by the water, a longer route or cultural history.

Water and park as different focal points

Erlenweiher swimming lake covers almost 1.8 hectares and offers swimming in a natural body of water. The lake has a designated non-swimmer area and several play structures for children. Current swimming conditions may vary. The Treibholz beach café is right next to the swimming area and serves drinks and snacks. Its opening and offerings may change, so check the latest opening hours and menu before your visit.

BĂĽrgerpark is located on the site of a former porcelain factory along the Fichtelnaab Cycle Route. The park has loungers and Smartflower solar flowers that generate electricity; park facilities may change. The distinction is clear for planning your visit: Erlenweiher focuses on swimming in a natural body of water, while BĂĽrgerpark combines the former factory site, park features and its location along the cycle route.

Exploring on foot and by bike

A tourism description, last updated on 15 September 2022, presents the marked Bankerlrunde as a circular route of more than 10 km through the landscape of the southern Steinwald Nature Park within the municipality of Krummennaab. The route passes through Stockau to Krummennaab; the description names the town centres of Krummennaab and Thumsenreuth as alternative starting points. Its length makes the Bankerlrunde a longer tour; check local trail conditions before setting out.

Another cycle route starts in Krummennaab at the junction with the Fichtelnaab Cycle Route and heads towards Windischeschenbach. For the Bankerlrunde, the route is described as a loop and its length is given; for this cycle route, the starting point and direction are specified. This lets you choose between a marked loop of more than 10 km and a cycle route with a stated direction, without treating the two routes as the same.

Churches and castle ruins

The Protestant churches of St. Leonhard in Krummennaab and St. Ägidius in Thumsenreuth were used as shared churches by both major Christian denominations from 1663 until 1930 and 1935, respectively. During that period, the two denominations used the churches jointly and in rotation. The different end dates are part of each church’s history: St. Leonhard was a shared church until 1930, and St. Ägidius until 1935.

The Catholic parish church of St. Ägidius in Thumsenreuth was built in 1935. A tourism description, last updated on 15 September 2022, calls the church’s acanthus altar the newest in the Upper Palatinate. The church’s construction date and its earlier shared use point to different aspects of local church history.

The ruins of Trautenberg Castle lie northeast of Krummennaab. The remaining visible features include rubble mounds from the former buildings, the neck ditch and part of the shield wall. After the railway bridge, there are remains of the walls of the former Trautenberg Castle. These surviving traces give the site a different historical profile from the churches: the focus here is on the remains of a former castle complex.

Tirschenreuth: museums and regional themes

In the town of Tirschenreuth, the MuseumsQuartier brings together the Upper Palatinate Fisheries Museum and six other specialist exhibitions in a former monastery. Visitors can explore almost 1,000 years of fishing and fish-farming history there; four large aquariums display local fish. Special exhibitions, talks, readings and concerts are held regularly. Dates for individual events may vary.

At the centre of Fischhofpark in Tirschenreuth are the historic Fischhof Bridge and the Fischhof, which houses the district court. The Tirschenreuth district is best known for Zoigl, the cult beer of the Upper Palatinate Forest. The district is also known for carp from the pond landscapes of the “Land of 1,000 Ponds.” These cultural and culinary themes belong to the wider destination of Tirschenreuth and add explicitly regional—not local—highlights to the picture of Krummennaab.
