Unterallgäu: Kneipp Towns, Forest Trails and Baroque Architecture
Accommodation in Unterallgäu
The Iller forms the natural boundary of Unterallgäu to the west, and the Wertach to the east. If you are planning a stay, you can include nature trails, Baroque buildings and Kneipp towns in your travel plans. A museum about Sebastian Kneipp and a recurring culinary event also add their own distinctive touches.
Getting here and finding your way
Unterallgäu is served by the A7 and A96 motorways. An extensive road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg make it easy to reach. This gives you a choice of travel options when planning your trip. Check the latest traffic information for your travel dates.
There is also a consistent system to help you find your way around the district: the cycling and hiking trails are all signposted in the same way. The Glückswege trails in Unterallgäu are another option. If you would like to spend time outdoors, you can include these trails alongside individual natural attractions in your plans.
Nature trails and distinctive landscapes
The Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has its own educational trail and viewing platform. You can combine a visit with a walk, with the educational trail and the view from the platform offering different points of interest.
The forest adventure trails also vary in length and theme. In Bad Grönenbach, the 3.2-kilometre trail introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. The Buxheim Forest Adventure Trail follows a 2.7-kilometre route around the Buxheim pond and is designed to engage all the senses. In the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren, eleven stations lead visitors along the forest adventure trail. You can directly compare the two routes with stated lengths: the trail in Bad Grönenbach is longer, while the Buxheim trail includes the pond. In Ottobeuren, the eleven stations offer a different, specific point of reference when choosing a trail.
Baroque buildings and Kneipp history
The Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren is one of Unterallgäu’s significant architectural monuments. In Kirchheim, Fuggerschloss is home to the world-famous Cedar Hall. The former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls, while Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim is also among the region’s significant monuments. These examples highlight different features, from the basilica and the castle’s grand room to the choir stalls and the castle itself.
Different access periods apply to the various parts of Mindelburg Castle: the castle courtyard is open year-round, while the keep, which has been converted into a viewing tower, is open from April to October. Check the seasonal information before your visit. In Bad Wörishofen, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum in the east wing of the monastery documents the life and work of the famous priest through more than 2,000 exhibits.
Bad Wörishofen is one of Unterallgäu’s Kneipp health resorts; Ottobeuren is a Kneipp spa town. The two places therefore have different Kneipp designations. If this is an important theme for your trip, you can consider both as separate destinations without treating their designations as interchangeable.
Seasonal food and drink
The Culinary Mile takes place twice a year in Bad Wörishofen, in spring and autumn. Numerous tasting stalls serve freshly prepared dishes; individual menus may vary. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the latest dates.
