Pfofeld: The Limes, St. Michael’s Church and Langlau
Accommodation in Pfofeld
Pfofeld brings together Roman traces, local history, nature and waterside recreation. These different highlights can help you plan your stay: the former Limes and St. Michael’s Church tell the story of the past; Langlauer Buck is known for its nature reserve and adventure playground; and Langlau Lake Centre is located within the municipality.
Roman Traces and Local History
The former Roman Limes runs from east to west across the municipality of Pfofeld; its route through the municipality is about four kilometres long. Around Pfofeld, the Limes Trail leads to Roman traces in the municipal districts of Pfofeld and Theilenhofen. Highlights include the Roman bathhouse near Theilenhofen and the partially reconstructed Limes tower near Rittern. The place names help you distinguish between the sites and put the route of the Limes Trail beyond Pfofeld into context.
St. Michael’s Church in Pfofeld offers another glimpse into local history. It was built from sandstone around 1130. The chancel and nave contain 15th-century Gothic frescoes, which were not uncovered again until after the Second World War. The building date and paintings point to different historical layers: the early church building and the later rediscovery of its wall paintings.
The Flurumritt, a traditional ride along the boundaries of the village’s fields, is also part of local tradition. It takes place every twelve years. If this custom is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates before planning your trip around it.
Nature and Play at Langlauer Buck
Numerous fruit trees and blackthorn hedges line the path at Langlauer Buck. The route passes through a nature reserve with nutrient-poor grassland. Both the trees and hedges along the path and the protected meadow landscape shape this area. Visitors interested in local nature will find a different focus here than at the Roman sites or the church.
The natural adventure playground at Langlauer Buck features a hedge tunnel, a seesaw, a hillside slide and a cloud swing, all available for use. The equipment may change. If particular play equipment is important to your plans, check what is currently available before your visit.
Routes and Getting Around
A cycle path connects Pfofeld and Langlau and is accessible as far as Dornhausen. At the Rehenbühl roundabout, a tunnel within the municipality allows you to cross State Road 2222 safely. Both details provide practical orientation for your stay: the cycle path links the named places, and the tunnel offers a crossing point on the state road.
Leisure at Langlau Lake Centre
Langlau Lake Centre is located within the municipality of Pfofeld. Its wide sandy beach has a grassy sunbathing area and a shallow entry into the water; the beach is freely accessible. Popular activities at the lake include swimming, sailing, windsurfing, SUP paddling, pedal boating and mini golf. Alongside the routes and natural areas, the beach and waterside leisure options offer another focus to consider when planning your trip.
The Limes in the Wider Region
The Limes is also a defining feature of the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district: it runs for about 40 kilometres across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. The approximately four kilometres through the municipality of Pfofeld and the roughly 40 kilometres in the district describe the same Roman frontier at different scales. This puts the local stretch into a wider regional context.
