In Pappenheim, the Willow Church and trails with different routes provide practical guidance for planning your trip. The Altmühltal Cycle Route passes directly by the Willow Church; it is also directly accessible on foot. A hiking trail begins at the outdoor swimming pool and initially follows the river along the west bank of the Altmühl to Zimmern. After crossing the river, it continues along the valley floor on the east bank to Solnhofen. You can therefore choose between the Willow Church as a destination and a hiking route leading from Pappenheim via Zimmern towards Solnhofen.

Trails and landscapes in Pappenheim

Another cycling option is a section of the Altmühltal Cycle Route from Pappenheim, which follows the Altmühl’s natural bends. Along the way, you’ll find heathland covered with wild juniper, as well as silver thistles, grass lilies and blue moor-grass. The choice between cycling and hiking therefore involves more than just the mode of transport: the cycling tour follows the river bends and the landscape and plant features mentioned, while the hiking route is described as crossing both sides of the river and passing through the towns of Zimmern and Solnhofen. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Roman heritage in the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen

Roman heritage is another consideration when planning a trip to the region. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure hoard and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths. The Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed; numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bath complexes in the district bear witness to its Roman history.

Another historic destination in the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen area is the former Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg. It stands above Weißenburg on the southern Franconian Jura’s highest hilltop, at 630 metres, and is an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Guided tours are offered from May to October, subject to weather conditions. If a guided tour is part of your plans, check the dates before travelling.

Hiking, cycling and waterways in the region

The wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen also offers longer routes suited to different ways of travelling. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the Altmühltal Nature Park. It is certified by the German Hiking Association as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland”; if this award matters to your choice, check its current status. The Altmühltal Cycle Route runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park. The Altmühl canoeing route between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging is just under 120 kilometres long. These details offer a practical comparison by mode of transport and route length; conditions for boating may vary by season.

The southern part of the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen lies within the Altmühltal Nature Park. Water sports are generally permitted on the district’s lakes, but at Igelsbachsee only as part of public use. Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Another way to experience nature is the approximately 120-hectare Bird Island in Altmühlsee, where the Bavarian Association for the Protection of Birds offers ornithological guided tours. Check the availability of tours in advance and observe the applicable rules for using the lakes.
