Wendelstein: Between Forest Trails and Craft Traditions
Accommodation in Wendelstein
Wendelstein combines forest trails with a rich history of architecture and craftsmanship. Circular routes lead through the forest and the Wernloch; the fortified church, mill and half-timbered buildings tell stories of different eras. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose your focus based on whether you mainly want to hike, cycle, explore historic sites or attend a cultural event.
Forest Trails and Hikes
The Forest Discovery Trail is a circular route about 4.2 kilometres long. Information boards and stations explore the forest’s various functions. The trail also includes a woodland playground for children. It is accessible year-round and suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.
The circular route through the Wernloch is a similar length, at about 4.5 kilometres. It starts at the car park on Nürnberger Straße, by the Old Canal in Wendelstein. You can choose between a route with information about the functions of the forest and a hike through the Wernloch. Another hike passes through Wendelstein, Kleinschwarzenlohe and Kornburg. It starts and ends at the Wendenbrunnen in the centre of Wendelstein.
Cycling Along the Old Canal
In Wendelstein, the Five Rivers Cycle Route runs parallel to the Old Canal. The “Mills & Industry” cycle route is a loop of about 45 kilometres along the Five Rivers Cycle Route through Wendelstein, Schwanstetten and Rednitzhembach. Compared with the two circular walks described above, this is a different scale: they are about 4.2 and 4.5 kilometres long, respectively. This makes it possible to distinguish the outings by mode of transport and stated distance.
Fortified Church, Mill and Half-Timbered Buildings
The Gothic Church of St George is Wendelstein’s oldest building. As a fortified church, it served as a refuge for the population in times of war. The Schwarzach loops around the rock by the Church of St George. Those interested in architectural history can also find examples from different centuries: the Nuremberg patrician Pfinzing family had Pfinzing Castle built as a country manor in the 16th century. The paper mill, with its manor house, factory building and grinding mill, forms an early industrial factory complex dating from the 17th to the 19th century.
The half-timbered house by the fountain is a complex built in 1705, comprising a farmhouse, stable and barn. It can only be viewed from the outside, so plan to see it from outside. The buildings from different periods offer a different way to explore Wendelstein than the hiking trails: here, the focus is on historic architectural styles and how they were used.
Crafts and Cultural Events
The Woodturning and Metal Spinning Museum is housed in the former water house. It preserves products, tools and machines from traditional crafts; demonstrations on the lathe are also offered. At Badhausplatz, steps lead down to the Schwarzach, and information boards recall the former bathhouse.
Recurring events with different themes offer opportunities to attend cultural events. During the Summer Serenades, musical and literary performers entertain audiences at Badhausplatz on every Sunday in August. Check the dates for your intended year of travel. The Jazz & Blues Open takes place in Wendelstein every year during the week around 1 May. Jegelscheune also offers a high-quality cultural programme.
