Kladow: The Havel, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Kladow
Kladow brings together the Havel and its lake landscape, cycling routes and local history. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether you would like to focus on spending time by the water, cycling a route or including historic buildings in your stay.
The Havel, Lakes and Routes
Kladow lies amid the Havel River and its lakes. Possible activities include fishing, sailing, paddling and rowing; in summer, swimming is also possible in GroĂź-Glienicke Lake. The landscape thus offers a variety of ways to spend time on and by the water.
Access to Imchen Island is prohibited. The BVG ferry route passes directly by it; from the ferry, you can see the breeding colonies of grey herons and cormorants. The birds’ visibility depends on the season. The island itself is therefore not a place to land, but the bird colonies can be observed from the ferry route.
The Havel Cycle Route passes through Neukladow Manor Park and connects it to the network of long-distance cycling routes. The listed manor house stands directly on the Havel in the nearly 20-hectare landscaped park. The park thus brings together a specific cycling route, listed architecture and a riverside location.
A different route description applies to the Dr. Max Fränkel Country House Garden: it can be reached via the Havel Riverside Walking Trail, which connects to the EuroVelo route. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing this connection from the Havel Cycle Route, which passes through Neukladow Manor Park.
Ferry Service to Alt-Kladow
BVG ferry line F10 connects S Wannsee with Alt-Kladow. The average journey time between the stations is 20 minutes. As route and journey time information may change due to changes in service, check the current timetable before travelling.
Historic Buildings and Reconstruction
The village church in Alt-Kladow is a historic building dating from 1818–1819. The protected complex also includes the churchyard wall, the churchyard and the village square. The Church of the Good Shepherd, with its reed roof, is also a historic building in Kladow; it dates from 1951–1953. The dates mark different periods: the village church belongs to the early 19th century, while the reed-roofed church dates from the post-war years.
The Finnish House Estate in Kladow is also connected with reconstruction after 1945: it was Finland’s contribution to the effort. The estate and the two churches thus offer different points of connection to the area’s history, from the architectural history of individual listed buildings to the reconstruction of the locality.
Berlin in a Broader Context
In the wider destination of Berlin, you can discover other parks. Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest and most visited inner-city park; it is used for walks, outdoor activities and picnics. Tempelhofer Feld is a large public park where people picnic, sunbathe and play sports. These examples offer a broader view of Berlin, while Kladow’s local landscape is shaped by the Havel and its lakes.
