Discover Marzahn: Gardens and History
Accommodation in Marzahn
Marzahn in Berlin can be explored during a stay in a variety of ways, depending on your interests: garden culture at Berlin-Marzahn Recreational Park, the district’s history at the district museum, and historic buildings such as the village church and the post mill. If you are looking for a hotel in Marzahn, these themes can help guide your plans. Choose the focus of your stay based on the places and subjects that interest you.
Gardens and walking paths in the recreational park
Berlin-Marzahn Recreational Park covers 43 hectares. Its expansive grounds include broad meadows, flower beds and walking paths. The Gardens of the World feature international garden culture in nine themed gardens. The gardens and open meadows offer different experiences: the themed gardens give the park a distinct cultural focus, while the meadows, flower beds and paths shape the experience of spending time outdoors.
This gives you a specific choice when planning: you can focus your visit mainly on the nine themed gardens, or make the entire park, with its meadows, flower beds and walking paths, the focus of your visit. If you are interested in international garden culture, the number and variety of themed gardens provide a useful guide. If you enjoy walking, you can include the paths and expansive green spaces in your plans for the day.
District history and historic buildings
The Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Museum researches and presents the history of the district and its localities: Biesdorf, Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Marzahn. It features a permanent exhibition and changing thematic exhibitions. The museum is housed in a former village school in the Angerdorf (village green village) of Alt-Marzahn, which has existed since the 13th century. Its scope therefore extends beyond Marzahn to cover the history of the entire Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. The museum is a suitable focus if you are interested not only in one locality, but in the history of the district as a whole.
Buildings and their dates provide further points of historical interest. Marzahn Village Church is a historic monument dating from 1870–1871. Its baptismal font dates from around 1620. KulturGut Marzahn is located in a former three-sided farmstead. Each of these places represents different aspects of local and architectural history; the dates given range from the early 17th century to the late 19th century.
The Berlin-Marzahn post mill also offers a specific historical focus: it is the village’s fourth post mill and has stood there since 1993. On a guided tour, visitors can learn about the journey from grain to bread. Reservations are recommended for a tour. If you plan to include this in your stay, take the recommended reservation into account when preparing.
Plan your stay around your interests
The local attractions cover distinctly different subjects: the Gardens of the World showcase international garden culture, the museum explores the history of the district and its localities, and a mill tour focuses on the journey from grain to bread. The village church and KulturGut add historic buildings from different periods and with different former uses. Choose your destination based on your interests, without combining the different attractions into a single sightseeing itinerary.
