Bremerhaven Between Climate, Seafaring and Art

At the Klimahaus, the journey along the 8th meridian passes through five continents and nine locations. In Bremerhaven, you’ll encounter these global themes alongside the history of the port, fishing and seafaring. Art, a walk along the Weser dyke and views of the overseas ports also offer different perspectives on the city.

Climate and a Journey Around the World at the Klimahaus

The Klimahaus is an interactive world of learning and experiences devoted to climate, climate change and weather. Its journey along the 8th meridian connects five continents with nine locations. This brings the big picture of climate and weather together with a hands-on journey through different places. Visitors interested in these subjects will find a different focus here than in the museums devoted to the history of the port and seafaring.

Discover the History of the Port and Migration

The Historical Museum Bremerhaven presents the history of Bremerhaven and the region in six sections of its permanent exhibition. Historical tools, documents and ship models show what working in the port and at a shipyard was like. One section is devoted to deep-sea fishing and the fishing industry: it explores the development of fishing trawlers, their fishing grounds and different methods of fish processing. A visit to the museum therefore covers both working life and the development of the fishing industry.

The German Maritime Museum focuses on exhibitions about the relationship between people and the sea. Highlights include the restored wreck of a cog dating from 1380, the permanent exhibition “Ship Worlds” and the museum harbour. Vessels moored there include an ocean-going salvage tug, a lightship and a harbour tug. The submarine Wilhelm Bauer offers another maritime perspective: it is the last surviving Type XXI submarine and can be explored inside.

The German Emigration Center tells the story of migration through recreated settings and real family histories. The different approaches—historical objects, ships and working life, or recreated settings and family histories—offer different perspectives, without limiting a visit to just one aspect of Bremerhaven’s history.

Art and the Fishing Harbour

Fischkai57, at Schaufenster Fischereihafen, regularly hosts changing art exhibitions in a renovated industrial hall with almost 1,000 square metres of floor space. The works on display include paintings, photography, design and sculpture. These changing exhibitions make art another part of a stay in the fishing harbour.

Fischbahnhof 360° offers a 360° multimedia show about the history of fishing in Bremerhaven, from its beginnings in the late 19th century to today’s fishing and processing technology. Guided tours of Schaufenster Fischereihafen explore part of the historic fishing harbour, which is more than 100 years old. The year-round events programme includes culinary offerings centred on fish and the sea, music events, markets and family activities. The Harbour, Dyke and Other Experiences

The HafenBus takes you through Bremerhaven’s overseas ports, past container terminals, car terminals and large cargo ships. The tour offers a look inside a part of the harbour that is normally inaccessible. The High Swing offers a different perspective: located 86 metres above ground, it provides views over Bremerhaven and the Weser. If you prefer to explore on foot, you can enjoy the city’s maritime atmosphere along the Weser dyke.

The Zoo am Meer also offers its own view of the North Sea: its North Sea aquarium has nine tanks. To travel by bus from Bremerhaven Central Station, take routes 502, 505, 506, 508 or 509 to the Hochschule Bremerhaven/Stadttheater stop. From there, the museum harbour and the Wilhelm Bauer submarine are within walking distance. Bus routes may change, so check the latest timetable before travelling.
