Kirchwerder combines natural landscapes, historic sites and agricultural life. Specific points of interest include the Kirchwerder Wiesen, the Riepenburger Mill, St. Severini Kirchwerder and Hof Eggers. The range of activities extends from cycling and walking in the nature reserve to viewing historic grave slabs and visiting a farm offering dining, events and tourism. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether nature, cultural history or the farm will be your main focus.

Natural Landscapes and Outdoor Activities

The Kirchwerder Wiesen Nature Reserve extends across Kirchwerder and Neuengamme and covers 857 hectares. Its landscape includes fields, meadows, ditches, ponds and lakes. Fields and meadows sit alongside the various bodies of water, giving the reserve a range of landscape features. There are good opportunities for both cycling and walking. When planning, you can decide whether you would rather explore by bike or on foot.

Cycling Route and Circular Walking Trail

The southern nature route of the Elbe Cycle Route runs traffic-free through the Kirchwerder Wiesen Nature Reserve and along the embankment of the former Marschbahn railway. Check route conditions before setting out. On foot, a circular trail around Hof Eggers takes visitors into the landscape of the Vier- und Marschlande. You can choose between these options based on the activity: the Elbe Cycle Route section is a cycling route, while the path around Hof Eggers is a circular walking trail. This gives you two different ways to explore Kirchwerder and its landscape.

St. Severini Kirchwerder and the Riepenburger Mill

Nine large historic grave slabs can be viewed in the bridal house of St. Severini Kirchwerder. The St. Severini cemetery has the most extensive collection of valuable grave slabs from the 16th to the 19th century in the Vier- und Marschlande. This means that the individual slabs in the bridal house are complemented by a cemetery collection that stands out in the region. The Riepenburger Mill was first mentioned in 1318. It can be visited from February to December on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Check the visiting hours again before your arrival.

Hof Eggers and Agriculture

Hof Eggers in Kirchwerder has been family-owned since 1377. The farm practices organic arable farming and livestock breeding and has developed dining, events and tourism offerings on the farm. This gives the farm its own agricultural focus alongside Kirchwerder’s nature and history. Since 2019, the farm has also operated an organic Bioland nursery in Hamburg-Spaden. It produces organic herbs and vegetable plants for the Hofcafé kitchen; these are also available through the Hofcafé and regional specialist retailers. The nursery in Hamburg-Spaden and the Hofcafé kitchen are thus connected through the produce used there.
