When planning a stay in Ehrenberg (Rhön), there are several specific highlights to choose from: Schafstein above Wüstensachsen, the “Der Ehrenberger” Extratour between Wüstensachsen and Reulbach, and cultural attractions in Ehrenberg and Seiferts.

Schafstein: Basalt and views

At 832 m, Schafstein is one of the local mountains of the municipality of Ehrenberg (Rhön) and lies above Wüstensachsen. Its massive basalt boulders form the largest block field in the Rhön. It has been designated a core zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve since 2000. This makes it a place where a striking geological landscape and a clearly defined protected-area status come together.

A wooded path leads to the summit along winding trails. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and valleys in several directions. Schafstein thus offers two distinct impressions: basalt boulders along the way and views of mountains and valleys from the summit. If you want to plan your hike around landforms and views, this mountain is an obvious highlight.

“Der Ehrenberger” Extratour: Trail and communal grazing lands

The “Der Ehrenberger” Extratour hike begins at the church in Wüstensachsen. Beyond the outdoor swimming pool, the route leaves the village and climbs to Schafstein. In the Ehrenberg area, it also connects the municipality’s communal grazing lands between Wüstensachsen and Reulbach. The route can therefore be understood both in terms of its ascent to Schafstein and its connection between the two villages.

Six discovery stations explain how the Rhön’s communal grazing lands came into being and describe the diversity of its flowering meadows and pastures. The route is therefore about more than its course: it also introduces the landscape it passes through. While Schafstein is associated with basalt boulders and views, the stations draw attention to the origins and diversity of the grazing lands. This can help you decide whether to focus your hike on the summit landscape or on the explanations of meadows and pastures.

Museum, theater and another attraction

The FCN Museum Ehrenberg-Thaiden displays exhibits on the former border between the occupation zones, the Rhön railways, and minerals and fossils. The museum is listed as open seasonally from April to October; check current access information before your visit. Its topics range from contemporary and transport history to minerals and fossils.

The Rhöner Apfel Sherry Theater in Seiferts offers a two-hour experience centered on the story of Rhön apple sherry, which can be enjoyed with all the senses. If you would like to include this in your travel plans, check availability with the provider in advance. Unlike the museum’s range of exhibition topics, the focus here is on the story of a regional product.

A Rhön selfie point is located above the Mariengrotte in Wüstensachsen. If this spot is important to your plans, check in advance whether the installation is still there.
