Eiterfeld between cycling, culture and nature
Accommodation in Eiterfeld
Eiterfeld is located in the Hessisches Kegelspiel holiday region between the Rhön and the Vogelsberg. The municipality is also part of the Hessisches Kegelspiel Tourism Association. There are several ways to plan a stay: a 27-kilometre cycle path, a hiking route, an outdoor swimming pool, and historical and cultural themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Eiterfeld, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to cycle, explore on foot, or plan your visit around culture and events?
Cycling on the Kegelspiel Cycle Path
The Kegelspiel Cycle Path runs between Hünfeld and Rasdorf through Eiterfeld and is 27 kilometres long. It is considered easy and follows a paved surface with very gentle gradients. Its length, surface and gradient give you concrete points of reference for assessing the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as local conditions can change.
For the most part, the cycle path follows the former Hünfeld-Wenigentaft railway line. Along the route, there are panoramic views towards the Rhön, the Haunetal valley and the Hessisches Kegelspiel. Surviving traces of the former railway include railway buildings, signalling equipment, a historic railway carriage and other railway exhibits. The route thus combines scenery with a historical theme of its own, rather than simply connecting two places.
On foot and outdoors
The Jubilee Tour is a hiking route linking scenic spots around Eiterfeld. It offers a different way to get around from the Kegelspiel Cycle Path: those who prefer to explore on foot can follow this route, while the 27-kilometre cycling route calls for different time and fitness planning.
The Eitra spring also adds a distinctive feature to the landscape: it rises beneath an oak tree at the foot of the Lichtberg. The Badepark Eiterfeld, meanwhile, is a family-friendly outdoor swimming pool with spacious grounds. As seasonal opening times may vary, check the current opening days before your visit.
Church and architectural history
The Catholic Church of St. George in Eiterfeld was first mentioned in 1295. The historical focus at Fürsteneck Castle is different: it was founded in the late Middle Ages by the Prince-Abbots of Fulda. Its architectural history spans the late Middle Ages, the Gothic period and the modern era. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: St. George is notable for its first mention, while Fürsteneck Castle developed over several eras.
Markets and theatre
Several traditional markets are held in Eiterfeld every year; individual dates may change. If visiting a market is important to your trip, check the date in advance. The Schloss Maßbach theatre company also regularly performs at the Eiterfeld community centre. For performances, too, it is worth checking the current programme, as dates may change.
