Rasdorf combines local history with a specific hiking route and the Point Alpha theme. The focus is on the Anger and the medieval Wehrfriedhof; there are also exhibitions on the history of the Cold War and the “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour. This makes it possible to tailor your stay to different interests: you can explore the town’s historic character, learn about more recent border history, or set aside more time for a longer circular hike. The wider Fulda travel region complements these local themes with the region’s landscapes and cultural attractions.

Anger and Wehrfriedhof

Rasdorf’s Anger is 170 metres long and 75 metres wide; it is the largest village square in Hesse. The medieval Wehrfriedhof is defined by a high wall and four defensive towers with loopholes. These features clearly illustrate its defensive character. An information column at the Wehrfriedhof provides details about the former church building. A QR code also links to an audio file with further information about the church and the Wehrfriedhof. In this way, the on-site information complements the architectural details of the ensemble.

Point Alpha and the history of the Cold War

At the US Camp Point Alpha, the focus is on the Cold War. Until 1989, Point Alpha was the U.S. Army’s most important observation post on the former inner German border. The “Cold War” exhibition explores the history, military life and strategic importance of Point Alpha. “Everyday Life” focuses on how people in the Hessian border region lived alongside American soldiers. The exhibition themes offer different perspectives: one focuses on history and the military role, while the other explores life together in the border region. If you want contemporary history to shape your stay, these themes offer a specific point of reference.

The “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour

The “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour is a circular trail through a varied landscape, passing sights from different historical periods. It is marked with a large red “R”. The route is 15.5 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and includes 368 metres of elevation gain. The estimated walking time is about five hours—a rough guide for planning. You can start the route at the Anger in the centre of Rasdorf or at the Point Alpha Memorial. If you’re planning a hike, you can take the distance, difficulty, elevation gain and approximate duration into account together.

Landscape and culture in the Fulda travel region

In the wider area around Rasdorf, nine closely spaced basalt peaks form the Hessian Kegelspiel. They are the weathered remnants of former volcanoes or volcanic vents. This gives the Fulda travel region a landscape focus alongside Rasdorf’s themes of local history and the Cold War: the peaks are notable for their geological origins and landforms.

The Rhön in Fulda district also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. Wasserkuppe is the highest mountain in Hesse and one of the district’s most prominent places. These regional activities provide a broader setting alongside the local Extratour, which offers a specific hiking route in Rasdorf.

The cultural programme in the travel region includes the Kultursommer Main-Kinzig-Fulda, which has been held for more than 27 years. The programme supports more than 100 events in music, theatre, art exhibitions, literature and other fields. The venues are spread across Main-Kinzig district and Fulda district. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the specific dates and venues.
