Stockstadt am Rhein combines the Rhine island of Kühkopf, protected floodplain landscapes and traces of local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Stockstadt am Rhein, you can tailor your stay to whether nature or history is your main focus. On Kühkopf, a surviving horse-head pump and the local history museum recall different chapters of the past; the Protestant Church adds another historical landmark to the townscape.

Kühkopf and the Floodplain Landscape

The Rhine island of Kühkopf was designated a nature reserve in 1952. The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue floodplain conservation area, covering almost 24 square kilometres, comprises the island and the adjoining Knoblochsaue floodplain complex to the north. Its extent provides a clear framework for the nature-focused side of your stay. There are around 60 kilometres of walking trails in the nature reserve, all of which are also suitable for cyclists. You can therefore plan your visit around walking or cycling. The roughly 60 kilometres of trails offer a range of options for walking and cycling tours. Check local trail and safety conditions before planning your trip.

Local History and Monuments

The last surviving horse-head pump from the oil production era stands at the Stockstadt 38 well on Kühkopf. As an industrial monument, it recalls this period of extraction. Oil production in the Hessisches Ried is also a subject at the local history museum, so you can encounter this theme both at a specific monument and in the exhibition. The Protestant Church in Stockstadt dates from 1607; its distinctive tower is a landmark in the townscape. The church has a Dreymann organ built in the 19th century, with an Aeoline stop. According to the description, no other organ of its kind has this stop. Two Herrensteine on the two banks of the Rhine commemorate Landgrave Ludwig VIII. On 10 March 1740, he and his entourage crossed the frozen Rhine on foot; both stones are still preserved today.

Local History Museum on Kühkopf

The Stockstadt am Rhein Local History Museum is housed in the former administrator’s residence of the Guntershausen estate on Kühkopf. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the estate, including the visit of Russian Tsar Nicholas II to Kühkopf in 1903. Other sections explore oil production in the Hessisches Ried and basket weaving. A replica of a gold-washing bench illustrates how gold was once panned in the Rhine. A separate room depicts the emergency landing of Count Zeppelin’s airship LZ 4 on the Rhine near Kühkopf, at Kornsand, in 1908.
