Breitenbach a.Herzberg: Castle, Hiking Trails and Silbersee

Herzberg Castle: Views and Events

Herzberg Castle is considered the largest hilltop castle in Hesse. On clear days, visibility permitting, the panoramic view from its castle walls can stretch almost 100 kilometers. The view is therefore expressly dependent on the weather and visibility. Various events are also held at the castle and on its grounds; no specific event date is implied.

Hiking and Pilgrimage

The Herzberger Ritter trail starts at the Mittelstraße hiking car park in Breitenbach a.Herzberg. The “Breitenbach(Herzberg) Kirche” bus stop is about 250 meters from the starting point. If you plan to arrive by bus, check the current timetable, as services may change. If you arrive by car, be sure to check local parking arrangements as well.

The Luther Trail 1521 is a pilgrim and hiking trail that follows Martin Luther’s historic route from Worms to the Wartburg near Eisenach over approximately 400 kilometers. In the area around Niederaula and Breitenbach a.Herzberg, it passes through the Rotkäppchenland region. The trail also places the local hiking landscape within a longer route: its regional course and the start of the Herzberger Ritter in Breitenbach are two different starting points for planning your trip.

Silbersee: Activities by the Water

You can swim and paddle at Silbersee. Fishing is also possible at the fishing ponds in the leisure center. The lake offers a range of activities: spending time in and on the water, as well as fishing in the ponds. Herzberger Campingwelt is a campground on the edge of Breitenbach a.Herzberg, right beside Silbersee.

For a meal by the lake, the “Seeblick Silbersee” restaurant is right beside the campground. It serves regional cuisine with a view of Silbersee. Herzberg Castle also has a castle restaurant and a sheltered beer garden. If you plan to visit either of these places to eat, check the current opening hours in advance.

An Annual Event in the Municipality

There is also a recurring hiking event outside the town center: the hiking day organized by the Wanderfreunde takes place every year in August in Hatterode, a district of the municipality of Breitenbach a.Herzberg.
