Accommodation in Niederaula
If you are looking for a hotel in Niederaula, you can choose based on the themes you want to shape your stay: cycling, the signposted hiking trail, a monthly market, or cultural and historical sites. Each destination offers a different focus. At Mengshäuser Kuppe, you will find two distinct points of interest: the archaeological site and the observation tower.
Mengshäuser Kuppe: Archaeological site and observation tower
The Wallenfels castle site, also known as Waldenfels, is an archaeological site on the northern slope of Mengshäuser Kuppe; the castle grounds can be reached via a forest track. The Heussner Tower stands on the summit and is 25 m high. The current observation tower, built from precast concrete elements, was constructed in 1964 and renovated by the municipality of Niederaula in 1990. When finding your way around, it is worth distinguishing between the locations: the castle site is on the northern slope, while the tower is on the summit.
Cycling routes and seasonal points of interest
From Oberaula-Wahlshausen, the Rotkäppchenland railway cycling route follows a route away from the railway line through the Aula valley to Niederaula. A separate cycling route reference concerns the R1: the Radlercafé is located along it in the centre of Solms. The “Freiwillige Feuerwehr - Solmser Radlercafe” association operates it regularly during the summer months. As it is open seasonally, it is advisable to check whether it is currently open before setting out.
The church in Niederaula is also a cycling and pilgrim church. This designation combines two thematic points of interest for finding your way around the town.
Hiking trail, the Fulda and the Eulenmarkt
You can reach Mengshäuser Kuppe from Niederaula-Mengshausen via the well-signposted “Schwälmer Weg” X 10 hiking trail. In Mengshausen, a district of Niederaula, there is a canoe landing site on the banks of the Fulda. For planning purposes, the destinations can be distinguished as follows: the hiking trail leads to the summit, while the landing site is on the riverbank.
Since 2002, the Niederaula Eulenmarkt has been held from February to December on the first Saturday of every month, from 9:00 to 12:30, at the fairground on Hattenbacher Straße. If the market is a deciding factor in your trip, check the details again locally before setting out. Its regular schedule offers a different focus from a stay geared mainly towards cycling or hiking routes.
In the wider destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg
The wider destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg also offers distinct cultural and town-related themes. In Bad Hersfeld, the annual festival has been held in the abbey ruins since 1951; these are considered the largest Romanesque church ruins in the world. Also in Bad Hersfeld, the Lullusfest has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus. In Rotenburg an der Fulda, the historic town centre includes more than 350 half-timbered houses. Together with Rotenburg Castle, they form a striking row of half-timbered buildings along the banks of the Fulda.
