Discover Bad Camberg: Half-Timbered Houses and Kneipp Spa Park
Accommodation in Bad Camberg
Bad Camberg combines a rich half-timbered heritage with Kneipp traditions and activities for a range of interests. Half-timbered houses dating from four centuries line the market square. The spa park has walking paths and various facilities, while guided town tours, circular hiking trails and cycling routes offer other ways to explore the area. You can tailor your stay to architecture, local history or outdoor activities.
Half-Timbered Houses, Amthof and Local History
The houses in the center of the market square retain features from the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods. Many of the buildings have remained largely unchanged. To learn more about the different styles, you can join the hour-and-a-half Bad Camberg half-timbered house tour. It passes 70 exposed half-timbered houses dating from six centuries and highlights different construction methods and details. Check dates and availability before your trip.
Amthof is also characterized by half-timbered architecture: the complex of buildings has 145 meters of exposed half-timbering. The Amthof Gallery is at the end of the south wing; markets and cultural events are held in the courtyard, which has a carillon. The Bad Camberg Festival presents theater performances there every year. Check the dates for the relevant season before your visit.
The Town and Tower Museum has been open since 1981 and is housed in the historic rooms of the Hohenfeld Chapel on Am Amthof street. Its objects and documents cover local history, regional heritage and natural history. The Old Jewish School is also devoted to the town’s history. Conceived as a documentation center, it virtually recreates the town fortifications, most of which have been lost, and keeps alive the memory of the Jewish community in Camberg, destroyed by the Nazis. Visitors can explore the school independently using the newly installed signs.
Kneipp Traditions and Relaxation in the Spa Park
Bad Camberg has been Hesse’s oldest Kneipp spa town and Germany’s third-oldest since 1927. The centrally located Kneipp Spa Park combines water features, mature trees, lawns, flower beds and walking paths. The park also has a foot-treading pool and an 18-hole mini-golf course. Next door are an exercise trail with equipment and instructions, as well as a boules court. Check opening hours, facility operations and access before your visit.
The Kneipp herb garden next to the MEDIAN Therapy Center at the spa park covers 800 square meters. Its 14 beds are home to 120 perennial species and 15 woody plant species. The garden is a distinctive feature of the park. The SinnesErlebnisPfad (Sensory Experience Trail) has added to the park’s paths since 2024: installations made of wood, metal and stone are located by the historic moat, on lawns and along paths, inviting visitors to try things out and explore for themselves. The program may change over time.
Since April 2024, the PHYSIO IM BADEHAUS practice has offered Kneipp therapy, physiotherapy and medical wellness under municipal management. Its services add a practical health focus to the town’s Kneipp offerings.
Guided Town Tours, Views and Special Places
Regular offerings include classic town tours, tours of half-timbered houses and the town wall, Kneipp herb garden tours, experiential town tours and tours for children. The tours provide insight into the town’s history; dates and booking terms may change. Seven milestone stones dating from 1700 stand along the path to the Chapel of the Cross. They were donated by noble families and made by the Hadamar School of Sculpture.
Since 1981, visitors have been able to climb the Obertorturm from the Hohenfeld Chapel via 133 steps to the tower keeper’s apartment. From the fourth floor, the view extends over Bad Camberg to the Taunus. Confirm visitor access before your trip. The tower offers a distinct viewpoint, while the market square and Amthof showcase the town’s half-timbered houses and architectural history.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes
For hiking, the Bad Camberg hiking map lists 27 circular trails totaling 225 kilometers. They were developed in collaboration with the beautification associations and district representatives of the town’s districts of Würges, Oberselters, Erbach, Dombach and Schwickershausen. The map also lists the 25-kilometer Kercheweg and four terrain therapy trails, which are described and can be used as part of exercise therapy. Check local information about trail conditions.
The town also offers maps for cycling: its official cycling guide includes 12 routes and three connecting routes toward Hessenweiler, Limburg and Idstein. GPX files can be used with other apps or GPS devices; navigation via Komoot requires an account. Route information may be updated, so it is worth checking the latest details before setting off.
