Elz: Historic Town Center, Art and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Elz
Elz brings together several themes for planning a trip: historic buildings in the town center, ecclesiastical art, and signposted cycling and hiking trails. When planning a hotel stay in Elz, you can decide whether to focus on local history, culture, or outdoor activities. A self-guided walk, a special tour by arrangement, and a cycling route cater to different interests and ways of planning.
Local History on a Walking Tour and at the Museum
The Historical Walking Tour in Elz leads to the older preserved buildings in the town center and gives an impression of what Elz once looked like, with its intact rows of old houses. The Haus Loer local history museum presents the history of Elz as well as many changing exhibitions; it was restored in 1988/91. If you would like to include Haus Loer in your plans, it is best to check in advance what visiting options are currently available.
Ecclesiastical Art and Special Tours
The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist contains Baroque altars from Limburg Cathedral as well as works by the Hadamar School, probably by Volk, dating to around 1748. By appointment, the Elz History and Museum Association offers special tours, including tours of the Baroque altars, the Celtic burial ground in Elz Forest, and the exhibitions at Haus Loer. The topics therefore extend beyond a single building, bringing together ecclesiastical art, a burial ground, and museum exhibitions.
Two independent works stand in the forecourt of the Elzer Backes: the bronze sculpture “The Singing Girl” and the sculpture “The Waving Girls.” They adorn the forecourt and symbolize the diverse work of local associations, as well as the village’s musical tradition. The sculptures thus complement the ecclesiastical and museum themes with two works of art connected to community life and musical tradition.
Cycling and Hiking Trails Around Elz
Elz has its own signposted network of cycling and hiking trails. The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R8 passes through Elz along the Elbbach; the Nassau-Wäller Cycling Loop also runs through the town and is about 58 kilometers long in total. These routes offer different points of reference when choosing a ride: the R8 is defined by its route through Elz along the Elbbach, while the cycling loop’s approximate total length can help you plan your tour.
One specific walking option leads from Malmeneich along the Hasslerbach to the Pfaffenkopf, an earthen mound of a lowland castle, in about twenty minutes. There are therefore different ways to compare the time and distance involved: this walk gives an approximate walking time to the destination, while the roughly 58 kilometers refers to the total length of the Nassau-Wäller Cycling Loop. This lets you choose between a short walk to a single destination and a cycling route with a stated total distance.
More Cultural Attractions in the Wider Limburg-Weilburg Destination
If you look beyond Elz to the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination, Runkel and Weilburg add their own cultural highlights. The medieval Runkel Castle was first mentioned in 1159 and still shapes the townscape today; the historic Lahn Bridge dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn preserved in its original condition. In Weilburg, the Rosenhang Museum was established in the former August Helbig brewery. It presents contemporary art in changing exhibitions across around 2,000 square meters. These examples open up further cultural themes in the wider destination, separate from the attractions described in Elz.
