Mengerskirchen: Castle History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Mengerskirchen
In Mengerskirchen, historic buildings and cycling routes are two clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. At the heart of the walled town complex is Mengerskirchen Castle; its oldest section houses the Tower Museum. The cycling routes also have different connections to the town: “Around the Knoten” loops around Mengerskirchen, while the long-distance cycle route R8 runs directly alongside Seeweiher lake.
Mengerskirchen Castle and Tower Museum
The castle was built between 1321 and 1341 and forms the centre of the walled town complex. A section of its own enclosing wall, including the gateway and half-tower, has survived. This reveals two architectural layers: the castle’s central position within the walled town and the remains of its own enclosure. The castle’s date places it in the first half of the 14th century; the surviving section of wall adds specific structural details to the picture.
The oldest part of the castle is a medieval residential and defensive tower, built by Count Johann of Nassau-Dillenburg in 1320. The tower contains medieval scrollwork paintings in the lime-secco technique, dating from 1523. The Tower Museum opened in 1990. Its oldest exhibits include Celtic storage vessels dating to around 500 BC. Fragments of 17th-century architectural paintings can be viewed in the entrance hall. The museum’s themes thus bring together early Celtic vessels, medieval defensive architecture and paintings from several centuries.
Church and other traces of local history
St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church also adds to the history of the town. It stands on the site of a church first mentioned in 1313. This reference to a church on the site predates the years when the castle was built, adding further historical context to Mengerskirchen.
Cycling in and around Mengerskirchen
The 32-kilometre circular cycling route “Around the Knoten” passes through the Westerwald uplands and loops around Mengerskirchen. Its length provides a specific distance to consider when planning your trip; the landscape is another factor to consider when choosing a cycling tour. In Mengerskirchen, the long-distance cycle route R8 runs directly alongside Seeweiher lake. The local cycling routes therefore offer different points of interest: “Around the Knoten” focuses on a circular route, the landscape and the distance, while the R8 follows the lakeshore. You can base your travel plans on whether you prefer a loop with a stated distance or Seeweiher lake as a local landmark.
Further historical highlights in the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination
Other places in the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination add to the picture of regional architectural history. In Runkel, the medieval castle was first mentioned in 1159 and continues to shape the townscape today. The historic Lahn Bridge there dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have survived in its original condition. In Limburg, St. George’s Cathedral, with its seven towers, rises above the Lahn on a steep rock. These examples offer a different focus from Mengerskirchen Castle and Tower Museum: castle and bridge in Runkel, sacred architecture in Limburg.
