Weilmünster: Weil Valley, trails and local history
Accommodation in Weilmünster
Weilmünster is a market town in the Weil Valley near the Main-Taunus region. Between the Lahn and the Taunus, the town serves as a starting point for activities and excursions on foot, by car or by bicycle. Which of these matters to you depends on whether you want to include the Weil Valley Trail, an event date or the town’s culture in your travel plans.
Trails and seasonal activities
The Weil Valley Trail passes through Weilmünster and ends in Weilburg on the Lahn. It follows the Weil River and is 47.5 kilometres long. This places Weilmünster along the route, while Weilburg marks its endpoint. The Weil Valley Cycle Route runs between Weilmünster and Weilburg and is connected to a former railway line.
During the recurring Car-Free Weil Valley Sunday, the Weil Valley road is closed to motorised traffic. Around 30 kilometres of the valley are then open for hiking, cycling and inline skating. The approximately 30 kilometres refer to the stretch of valley opened for this event; the 47.5 kilometres, by contrast, are the length of the Weil Valley Trail. The event takes place in summer, and its date varies from year to year. Check the date if you are planning your trip around it.
The seasonal Weil Valley bus runs from May to October on weekends and public holidays. It operates with a bicycle trailer; bicycles can be taken on board free of charge when travelling along the Weil Valley Trail. As seasonal operating times may change, check the current schedule before your trip.
Local history and culture
Kirberg Tower stands above the historic centre and offers views in every direction. It dates from around 1600 and was originally part of Weilmünster’s town fortifications. Its location and former function offer two different ways to view the town: the view over the centre and the history of its fortifications.
The Weilmünster Book of Remembrance documents people who died at the institution between 1939 and 1945, as well as people who were transported via Weilmünster to the Hadamar killing centre. The memorial cemetery in Weilmünster was established in 2003 as a place of remembrance for the victims of Nazi “euthanasia”.
Pastori includes a restaurant, a hotel and a club cinema, which is considered the oldest club cinema in Hesse. The restaurant offers a seasonal menu featuring regional dishes from local direct marketers. If you would like to include Pastori in your travel plans, check its current opening arrangements and cinema programme in advance.
Producers and markets
Kelterei Heil in Weilmünster-Laubuseschbach produces apple wine and fruit juices and has more than 60 products in its range. The family’s apple wine production dates back to the mid-1940s. This means the business combines a broad product range with a long history of production.
During the Kirmes weekend, the Weilmünster Farmers’ Market puts regional producers and direct marketers in the spotlight; dates vary from year to year. The Martinimarkt features a large general market in the market square and streets, as well as a flea market and an exhibition of amateur artists. The events therefore have different focuses: regional vendors shape the Farmers’ Market, while the Martinimarkt brings together different market formats and the amateur art exhibition. Check the dates if either market is important to your stay.
