Hofheim am Taunus: Forest Trails and City History
Accommodation in Hofheim am Taunus
Hofheim am Taunus offers opportunities for a stay focused on local history, archaeology and nature. If you are looking for a hotel, your interests can help guide your choice of destination: Would you like to learn more about the town, explore its trails or discover archaeological traces? You can explore these themes at various locations in Hofheim.
Kapellenberg: Settlement History and Trails
Kapellenberg is one of the significant archaeological sites of the Michelsberg culture. The settlement dates from 4200 to 3500 BC and covered a total of 45 hectares, with a built-up area of 26 hectares. Traces of the former ramparts are still visible in the landscape. The four-kilometre Archaeological Trail features information panels and leads through the history of Hofheim’s local hill and its settlement, going back to the Neolithic period. Kapellenberg is therefore a place to discover both the size and layout of the prehistoric settlement and its long history of habitation.
The mountain chapel and Cohausen Temple are also located on Kapellenberg. From the hiking trail on Kreuzweg road, a steep footpath leads to the mountain chapel in about five minutes. Cohausen Temple is in the forest and can be reached via hiking trails. These destinations add other points of interest on the local hill to the Archaeological Trail, though they are not part of the trail’s route.
The Town Museum and Hofheim’s History
Opened in 1993, the Hofheim Town Museum is right next to the historic Kellereibezirk district. Its permanent exhibition covers art, archaeology and local history. The museum offers another way to explore themes that also feature prominently on Kapellenberg: while the trail focuses on the settlement and its traces in the landscape, archaeology is one of the museum’s three exhibition areas.
Expert-led town tours share insights into Hofheim and its history. If you would rather get to know the town on a guided tour, check the dates in advance. The town museum is within walking distance of the bus and train station, making it easy to reach by public transport. When planning your visit, you can therefore combine a trip to the museum with arrival at Hofheim station.
Forest Trails and Nature
The freely accessible Forest Bird Trail runs at the end of Breckenheimer Straße, in the direction of Sportpark Heide. Seven learning stations share information about forest birds and the forest as a habitat. Groups of children and families can also book a rally there following the tracks of the tawny owl. It is 2.5 kilometres long and takes about two to three hours. The trail and its learning stations and the rally each have a different focus: one provides information at several stations, while the other follows the tawny owl theme over a longer route.
The “People and Earth” hiking trail explores another aspect of nature. It connects Hofheim’s town centre with the northern district of Lorsbach. Information panels on geological history, a digital extension and an information leaflet available since 2020 help explain the development of the landscape around Hofheim. The forest garden, meanwhile, focuses on plants and animals: it is a habitat, a place of learning and a place to relax. The forest and species conservation trail there shares information about forest and species conservation through more than 40 illustrated text panels.
