Kelkheim (Taunus): Nature, Culture and Culinary Delights
Accommodation in Kelkheim
When choosing a hotel destination, the themes that shape your stay often matter. In Kelkheim (Taunus), you’ll find specific options to explore: nature trails with different focuses, the starting point of a quality hiking trail, cultural history and regional cuisine.
Nature Trails in Kelkheim-Mitte
The Sindlinger Wiesen nature trail, also known as the town park, runs for around 700 metres along the Liederbach stream. The Gundelhardt forest trail is approximately 500 metres long and features 83 different trees and shrubs, mostly native deciduous and coniferous species. The trails are therefore a similar length, but have different focuses: the stream is the main feature at Sindlinger Wiesen, while Gundelhardt highlights the diversity of its trees and shrubs.
Hiking from Kelkheim
Kelkheim is the starting point of the “Taunus Schinderhannes Steig” quality hiking trail. Its trail markings begin at the historic Hof Gimbach. The certified trail is well marked in both directions. This gives you two clear points to factor into your travel plans: Kelkheim as the starting point and Hof Gimbach as the beginning of the marked route.
Museum, Craftsmanship and Architecture
The Kelkheim Museum features historic furniture from Kelkheim’s furniture-making industry, a record of the 100-year history of Kelkheim’s carpentry workshops, and a historic workshop. Furniture and carpentry are therefore at the heart of a museum visit. The Monastery and Parish Church of St. Francis offers a different perspective on local history: it was built in 1908/1909, together with the Franciscan monastery, in the Neo-Romanesque style.
Traces of earlier buildings can also be found in the garden at Hof Gimbach. Stone slabs mark the floor plans of the former chapel and the chaplain’s residence. The museum, church and these floor plans each offer a different focus if you want to shape your stay around the history of craftsmanship, architecture or historic sites.
Regional Cuisine and Culinary Delights
The Zauberberg complex in Kelkheim-Ruppertshain also has a restaurant, café and wine bar. As individual businesses may change, check which options are currently available before planning a visit.
At Hof Gimbach, home-grown produce is served fresh on your plate or in your glass. The menu also includes Hessian specialities, accompanied by apple wine made with apples from the farm or naturally cloudy apple juice. If you’re planning to stop for a meal, it’s worth checking the current menu.
The Wider Region: Main-Taunus
The wider Main-Taunus destination encompasses the Main-Taunus district, which brings together the vineyards of the Upper Rheingau, the forests of the Taunus and historic sights. The Flörsheimer Warte is a 15th-century watchtower that recalls the Kasteler Landwehr; it is also a destination for hikers and cyclists. The observation tower in Flörsheim Regional Park offers expansive views of the surrounding area. The regional park also offers opportunities for walks, bike rides and family outings.
