In Aarbergen, you can choose from historical sites, nature-themed attractions and outdoor activities. Options range from a ride on a historic hand-operated lever railcar to trails focused on the forest or the Hennethal landwehr. There is also a sculpture trail, and horse riding is available. When planning your stay, it is therefore helpful to first decide which activity you would like to focus on.

Handcar and Hennethal Landwehr

In the Aar Valley, you can ride a historic hand-operated lever railcar between Aarbergen-Michelbach in Hesse and Diez in Rhineland-Palatinate. A date must be booked in advance; confirm arrangements with the operator before your trip.

The educational trail to the historic Hennethal landwehr is just under two kilometres long and passes through an area of historical, geographical and natural interest. Information boards explain the route. The landwehr itself is a wall-and-ditch system around 325 metres long, which most likely dates from the late Middle Ages. It was rediscovered in 2003.

The landwehr lies at the highest point of the circular trail on the Platte. The circular trail starts at the car park on the L 3031, Hennethal exit, between Kettenbach and Daisbach. It is 1,830 metres long, takes 45 to 60 minutes and has an elevation gain of 85 metres; its difficulty is rated easy to moderate. Sturdy footwear is recommended in wet conditions. The distance, duration and elevation gain offer different points of reference when planning this loop.

Forest, Sculptures and Horse Riding

A three-kilometre forest trail passes eleven stations and is intended for visitors of all ages. The stations offer insights into the forest’s connections and distinctive features. This trail therefore has a different focus from the information boards on the landwehr educational trail: here, the forest takes centre stage.

If you are interested in art, you can view eleven sculptures by various artists along the sculpture trail. Horse riding is available in an indoor arena or outdoors. Annual competitions invite you to take part or watch. Contact the riding club in advance for the current competition schedule.

The trails and activities differ both in subject matter and in the planning information provided: the circular trail has details on duration and elevation gain, while a date must be booked in advance for the handcar. The forest trail, in turn, passes eleven stations on forest-related topics. These differences can help you choose the focus of your stay in Aarbergen.

The Wider Rheingau-Taunus District

The Rheingau-Taunus district is a separate regional context and should not be equated with the individual attractions in Aarbergen. The district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley through the municipal areas of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. Its cultural landscape is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terraced vineyards, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine.

The Upper German-Raetian Limes crosses the Rheingau-Taunus district for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. It runs for around 33 kilometres through the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park. Zugmantel Fort is located in the nature park and was part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Limes. The two lengths refer to different areas: the district and the nature park.

The Rheingau-Taunus district also offers 14 Riesling loops. These circular trails are 4 to 8 kilometres long, lie between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein, and focus on Riesling, winegrowing and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. If you plan to take one of these routes, check the conditions for the specific trail in advance.
