Wartenberg: Trails, Castle Ruins and Local History
Accommodation in Wartenberg
Wartenberg brings together hiking trails and historical themes with distinctive local landmarks: the castle ruins are located in the Lauterbach Graben, a themed trail leads to them, and the village of Landenhausen has an outdoor swimming pool. When planning your trip, you can therefore take different interests into account, including hiking, local history, poetry and swimming.
Castle Ruins and Time Trail
Wartenberg Castle Ruins lie between Angersbach and Bad Salzschlirf in the geologically significant Lauterbach Graben. They are situated on a mountain spur of the Birkich that extends about 300 metres into the valley. The landscape and geological history are also a focus of the Wartenberg Time Trail: this marked hiking trail is about 18 kilometres long and passes through the village and the Angersbach district. It covers the geology and geological history of Hesse and the Vogelsberg volcanic region, local history, and the region’s prehistory and early history.
A section of the Time Trail about five kilometres long is marked as the “Historical Circular Route”. It passes through the village to Wartenberg Castle Ruins, making it a shorter route option than the entire Time Trail. The Historical Circular Route through Angersbach conveys the village’s history since 812 with the help of numerous information boards. Photographs also show how it has changed over the past century.
Local History and Poetry Along the Way
Another cultural route is the Sun Trail of Poetry. It was created in 2014 by the Landenhausen Cultural Association (Kulturverein Landenhausen e. V.) and has been updated every year since with new poems and texts by well-known and regional artists. Alongside the historical themes of the Time Trail, this trail also features changing literary content.
Circular Routes and Trail Combinations
The Wartenberg Panorama Trail is a circular route around both villages, intended for hikers, riders, mountain bikers and Nordic walkers. Wartenberg Hiking Trails 1 to 5 are also circular routes around Wartenberg. All five intersect with the Panorama Trail and can be combined with it. When planning, you can therefore choose between the Panorama circular route and the marked hiking trails, or combine the routes described here.
Sections of the Panorama Trail are paved and are also suitable for wheelchair users, inline skaters, pushchairs and touring bikes. This applies to sections of the trail. The steep steps at Sonnberg in Angersbach can be bypassed; the alternative route is signposted. If you rely on any of these features, you can take the information about the individual trail sections into account when planning.
Outdoor Pool and Getting There
Landenhausen village has the Landenhausen outdoor swimming pool. The heated pool has a swimming pool with starting blocks, a non-swimmer pool and a toddlers’ pool. If you plan to visit, check the seasonal opening hours in advance.
Vogelsberger Vulkan-Express routes VB-90 and VB-91 run through Wartenberg. The Vulkan-Express buses have trailers for carrying bicycles and pedelecs; bicycle transport is free of charge within the RMV area. As operating conditions vary by season, it is advisable to check the latest information before travelling. This lets you include the bus connection and bicycle transport in your travel plans without basing your choice of trails solely on a particular way of getting there.
