Frankershausen offers a variety of themes for a stay: a listed fortified church, a striking karst landscape and the P2 Frankershäuser Karst premium trail. When planning, distinguish the trail through the Hielöcher from the access requirement for the Kripplöcher section of the nature reserve. This lets you consider the architecture, landscape and trail conditions as separate highlights.

Church and Architectural History

The Protestant church in Frankershausen is a listed cultural monument: a fortified church with an early Gothic core that was extended in the Neoclassical style. Its dominant chancel tower and portico with Doric columns define its architecture. The church also has an organ by Fr. Krebaum and 18th-century gravestones in the cemetery. The early Gothic core and Neoclassical extension reveal distinct building phases; the chancel tower and portico give the building further clearly identifiable architectural features.

Karst Landscape and Natural Monuments

The Hie- und Kripplöcher nature reserve near Frankershausen is a karst area. Larger and smaller, shallow and deep sinkholes have shaped the landscape; the area is the most significant sinkhole region in North Hesse. Sheep grazing is the most important nature conservation measure in the reserve. It preserves habitats for endangered animal and plant species. Kressenborn is also among the natural monuments in Frankershausen.

Hiking Trail and Access to the Kripplöcher Section

The P2 Frankershäuser Karst premium trail leads from Frankershausen through the Hielöcher nature reserve to Ellerstein and Großer Marstein. A special access requirement applies to the Kripplöcher section of the nature reserve: access is permitted only as part of guided hikes led by guides specially trained for this area. Before your visit, check whether a suitable guided hike is available. This allows you to distinguish the trail description from the separate access rule for the Kripplöcher when planning.

Berkatal: Mill Discovery Trail and Local History Museum

In Berkatal, the Mill Discovery Trail, which opened in summer 2025, is located right by the sports ground, the starting point of the P2 Frankershäuser Karst premium trail. The trail combines a playground, a meeting place and an educational trail. Activities include water features and a digital scavenger hunt along the P hiking trail. The water-play island illustrates how water brings life and movement. As facilities may change, check in advance whether each activity is currently available.

The Berkatal Local History Museum explores life, housing and work in the region in earlier times, with a particular focus on regional mining history. Exhibits include rocks and minerals with information about their uses, old miners’ lamps and mining equipment, as well as prehistoric items from the Meißnervorland. Other topics include agriculture and woodworking; flax and wool processing are also documented. The museum is open by telephone appointment. If you are interested in specific exhibits, ask about them when arranging your visit, as displays may change. The Berkatal Local History Museum also includes an old classroom, a general store and a mineral collection established in 2019.
