Herleshausen combines memories of the former border crossing with a castle, a fortified church and a collection devoted to medicine, pharmacy and local culture. There are also marked hiking trails, the Werra Valley Cycle Path and canoeing on the Werra. If you are looking for a hotel in Herleshausen, you can plan your trip around your own interests—such as border history, historic sites or outdoor activities.

Border History at WerraGrenzPark

WerraGrenzPark was inaugurated in summer 2022 at the site of the former inner-German border crossing at Herleshausen. Information boards, image and text panels, and audiovisual stations present the history of the former border town. The Werra Valley Cycle Path runs directly beside the park, bringing a cycling route and the history of the border together in one place. Admission to the park is free. If you are planning a specific visit, check the visitor information in advance.

Another historic landmark is the “Grenzbahnhof für Zeitgeschichte” museum at Herleshausen station. It opened over the weekend of 10 and 11 October 2015. The INSEL · DOKTOR · HAUS has a different focus: it displays a wide range of objects and rarities related to medicine, pharmacy and local culture, collected over three generations by the Dr. Marsch family of Herleshausen. The two museums offer different subjects for a visit focused on history and collections.

Augustenau Castle and the Fortified Church

Augustenau Castle was built in 1539 as the residence of Georg von Reckrodt. The Protestant fortified church stands directly beside it; it originated around 1300 as a fortified church. Together, the neighboring buildings offer two distinct architectural points of reference in the town’s history: the castle, built as a residence, and the older church, with its fortified design.

Historic features have also been preserved inside the fortified church. These include 14th-century frescoes and inscribed and heraldic tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries. Among them is the 1558 epitaph of the knight Georg von Reckrodt. Since Easter 2018, the fortified church has been designated a cycling church. This designation adds a connection to cycling to the building’s history and art, without replacing its historical details.

Hiking, Cycling and Canoeing

Herleshausen has 35 kilometres of marked hiking trails. For cyclists, the Werra Valley Cycle Path runs directly by WerraGrenzPark; Herleshausen is accessible by Deutsche Bahn for the section from Herleshausen to Treffurt. Bahnhofstraße is listed as the starting point. Check current timetables if you are planning to travel by train. The route, its connection to rail travel and the marked hiking trails address different planning questions, so how you would like to get around can be a useful starting point for planning your trip.

Canoeing on the Werra is available as a leisure activity in Herleshausen. Operators and water conditions may vary, so check them if you are planning a specific canoe trip. There are several different ways to enjoy the area: marked hiking trails, a cycling route with a described rail connection, and a water sport on the Werra.

The Kirmes, a traditional fair organized by the village youth for generations, is also part of local culture.

Werra-Meißner District: Regional Nature and Hiking

For tourism, Werra-Meißner District is part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. The region between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufungen Forest is characterized by geological diversity, varied landscapes, and diverse flora and fauna. Hoher Meißner is considered the region’s highest mountain and the home of Frau Holle.

Werra-Meißner District has a dense network of certified premium trails, as well as the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen trail. These hiking routes lead to particularly scenic areas in the Geo-Nature Park. Seasonal highlights include the cherry blossom in the Witzenhausen cherry-growing area, orchid blooms, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, Frau Holle’s flower meadows, and autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. The timing of seasonal sights can vary from year to year.
