Berumerfehn can be explored through two themes: the moorland and how it has been used, and the history of its buildings and village. The museum, historic buildings and waterways tell different chapters; cycling, walks and peat-boat trips complement the cultural focus. Which of these aspects interests you most can provide a starting point for planning your stay.

Moorland and Museum

The Berumerfehn Forest and Moor Museum is housed in a former village school building on the edge of the raised bog, right by the forest. Its subject matter ranges from the formation of the moor and peat extraction to the settlement of Berumerfehn. Environmental protection and nature conservation are also among its topics. The museum’s exhibits thus bring together the history of the landscape and the history of the village. The museum offers guided tours for school classes and groups by arrangement; if you plan such a tour, arrange your visit in advance.

Building History and Remembrance

The Kompaniehaus is a listed building. It was built in 1830 as a place for the members of the Norder Fehn-Societät to relax after their half-day journey from Norden to Norderfehn. The ice cellar is also part of this historical context: more than 100 years ago, it was used to cool drinks and food for the Kompaniehaus. The two structures thus represent different aspects of everyday life at the time, without requiring a more precise construction or use date for the ice cellar.

The Red Mill in Berumerfehn is a two-storey Dutch-style gallery mill with a ridge height of 20.50 metres. It was rebuilt in 1937 using parts from a mill in Carolinensiel. It is still used to grind grain for animal feed. If this particular use is important to your travel plans, confirm its current status in advance. The village church, also known as Berumerfehner Kirche, was completed in 1895.

In Berumerfehn Forest, the Norder Fehngesellschaft monument commemorates the founders of Norder Vehn; it stands beside a small lake. A walk through the forest offers another way to explore the area. The church, Kompaniehaus, mill and monument provide different points of reference for the village’s history, from its founding to buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Canal and Water Engineering

The Berumerfehn Canal was dug from 1794 onward so that peat could be transported to Norden by water. Water levels also mattered for peat shipping: the water level in the Berumerfehn moor was ten metres above that of the Norder Galgentief. This made lock chambers, known as Verlaate, necessary. The canal and locks thus illustrate two connected aspects of peat transport: the waterway and the measures needed to manage the difference in elevation.

Cycling, Walking and Peat-Boat Trips

The “Ewiges Meer Route” is a 32-kilometre circular cycling route around the area once occupied by this raised-bog region. The Berumerfehn Pfahlgott stands along the way. It marks ten information boards with facts about the moor and its history. Visitors interested in the landscape and its past can therefore find a connection between the cycling route and the information boards along it. The stated distance helps you gauge the length of the ride, without assuming a particular journey time or level of difficulty.

You can explore Berumerfehn Forest on foot with a walk. For a different perspective on the waterways, take an excursion aboard the historic peat boat “Selika” on the Mittelwieke. A walk, circular route and boat trip offer different ways to explore: you can walk through the forest, plan a longer cycling route or choose a trip on the water.

Find a Hotel to Suit Your Stay

This can help guide your choice of destination; compare the specific details of each hotel offer directly.
