Discover Leezdorf: Windmill, Gardens and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Leezdorf
Leezdorf can be discovered through two distinctive features: its history of windmills and village life, and a dispersed settlement pattern that remains visible to this day. The Leezdorf windmill is considered the village’s landmark. At the same time, Leezdorf’s dispersed settlement pattern continues to shape the area. If you are looking for a hotel in Leezdorf, you can plan your stay around interests such as windmill history, visiting gardens or cycling.
Windmill, village centre and village culture
The present-day Leezdorf windmill is a two-storey gallery Dutch windmill, built in 1896/97. Its type and date of construction place this landmark in its historical context. The windmill houses an exhibition room called “Oll bruukdom”. The Leezdorf local history association received a third prize for outstanding heritage conservation in Weser-Ems for restoring the windmill.
A former storage room has been converted into a tea house. Check before travelling whether the tea house will be available during your visit. There is also a large market square in the village centre, where village and windmill festivals are held regularly. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the dates in advance.
Gardens and cycling tours
Schittenhelm garden centre in Leezdorf offers themed gardens, including a fairy garden, a bamboo grove and a woodland garden. The areas are designed for walking and exploring, with each offering a different theme. Check the opening arrangements before setting out.
The “Torfkanäle und Treidelwege” (“Peat Canals and Towpaths”) cycling route passes the Leezdorf windmill and continues from there towards Hage and Lütetsburg. Along the way, the route passes small farms, fields and pastureland. This section can therefore be described both in terms of its connection to the windmill and the landscape along the way.
Another route description is “Zu den Likedeelern” (“To the Likedeelers”): the 29.1-kilometre circular tour starts in Marienhafe, passes through Leezdorf, Hage and Norden, and returns to Marienhafe. When choosing, you can take into account these different descriptions: the route past the windmill towards Hage and Lütetsburg, or the circular tour with named places and a set total distance. Check route conditions before planning a ride.

In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the plants and birdlife of the wet meadows on walks or cycling trips. The nature conservation centre is also home to the listed Gulfhaus, a typical East Frisian farmhouse dating from 1843. Thus, the regional context includes not only environmental education and landscape conservation, but also a specific example of East Frisian architectural history.
