Discover Lütetsburg
Accommodation in Lütetsburg
Lütetsburg is an interesting destination if you would like to include garden history, nature and a cycling tour in your travel plans. The main attraction is Lütetsburg Castle Park, complemented by the history of the castle and its location in relation to the North Sea.
English Landscape Garden and Nature
Lütetsburg Castle Park was laid out in the early Romantic style. It is the largest privately owned English landscape garden in northern Germany and one of the few surviving examples of this type on mainland Europe. More than 150 species of trees and shrubs are represented in the park, and around 40 bird species live there. The two descriptions complement each other: one identifies the type of garden, while the other describes its stylistic expression.
The castle park café serves cakes, tea, coffee and seasonal dishes. As the menu may change, ask about the current selection if you have a particular dish in mind. Children aged six to twelve can explore the park in a mini Land Rover. This seasonal activity is available approximately from May to October and is subject to conditions. If the activity is important to your plans, check availability in advance.
Castle History and Guided Tours
The origins of Lütetsburg Castle date back to the East Frisian chieftain Lütet Manninga. The present-day castle was rebuilt on foundations dating from 1517 after a devastating fire in 1956. It is privately occupied, and interior visits are not possible.
Guided tours of the castle park introduce visitors to the garden’s history and botany. Topics include exotic plants, botanical rarities and architecture. The tours thus bring together different aspects of the grounds: their history, plant life and design.
Cycling Tour and Regional Orientation
The Red Route is a short cycling tour starting in Norden. This circular route covers approximately 18 kilometres and goes to Lütetsburg and its English landscape garden. To reach the castle, take the train to Norden and then continue by Weser-Ems bus service. Check the timetables before your trip. The North Sea is about eight kilometres from Lütetsburg. The distances refer to different things: 18 kilometres is the length of the circular route, while about eight kilometres is the distance to the North Sea.
When choosing between the options, what matters most is which experiences you want to shape your trip: the guided tour combines garden history with botany and architecture, the Red Route is a circular tour starting in Norden, and the mini Land Rover activity is seasonally available for children aged six to twelve. The options therefore differ in their subject, mode of transport and availability period.
In the wider destination of Aurich
The Fehntjer Tief Nature Conservation Centre works to preserve the natural and cultural landscape of “Fehntjer Tief.” In the wider destination of Aurich, it is also an out-of-school learning centre for environmental education, as well as a place for community engagement and public outreach. In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the plants and birdlife of the wet meadows on walks or cycling trips. The listed Gulfhaus at the centre is a typical East Frisian farmhouse dating from 1843.
