When looking for a hotel in Bergen, it is worth exploring the different aspects of the town: Becklinger Moor lies to the northwest, Römstedthaus tells the story of rural life and archaeological finds, and the Thousand-Year-Old Oak is a natural monument. Bürgerpark is another specific place to visit. You can plan your stay according to whether you are more interested in landscapes, architectural history or local life.

Moorland and walking trail

Becklinger Moor lies in the northwest of Bergen. A walking trail runs around the moor near Bergen, in the southern Lüneburg Heath. If you include this trail in your plans, check the current conditions before setting out. The Südheide Nature Park provides a broader regional context: it stretches north of Celle between several heathland towns, including Bergen. The trail around the moor and the extent of the nature park thus describe different scales—the specific landscape and the wider region.

Römstedthaus: rural history and archaeological finds

Römstedthaus Museum is around 400 years old and has been preserved in its original condition. It offers a comprehensive insight into rural life. The main building is a smokehouse dating from the 17th century, so its architectural history is part of the visit, alongside life in the countryside. On the upper floor, a permanent archaeological exhibition features prehistoric and early historic finds, most of which come from the greater Bergen area. Historic domestic life in the main building and finds from the surrounding area offer two different perspectives on the region’s past.

Römstedthaus also offers museum education programs for school classes on various topics. If you plan to take part in one of these programs, check the current details in advance. This information is intended for school classes and is not a general assurance that an open educational program is available.

Natural monument and Bürgerpark

The Thousand-Year-Old Oak stands on the south side of St. Lamberti Church in Bergen and is a natural monument. Bürgerpark is a popular local recreation spot for residents and visitors, and its playground is a place to play. The two places offer different attractions: one is centered on a single natural monument, while the other is a park specifically intended for recreation and includes a playground. Together, they complement the moorland and the museum with other connections to Bergen.

Celle: more regional activities

Celle also offers a regional perspective on the Südheide Nature Park. There are ten signposted themed cycling routes with a combined length of more than 400 kilometers. The routes lead to notable sights and pass through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moor and pond landscapes. The nature park also has 23 themed hiking trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. This selection offers a different focus from the specific walking trail around Becklinger Moor.

Canoeing on heathland streams in Celle district is subject to a restricted permit each year from May 16 to October 14. Check local restrictions and water levels before setting out. This seasonal rule is a separate planning consideration for the Celle region; it does not describe the walking trail at Becklinger Moor.

Local attractions take center stage here, while the activities in the destination of Celle provide a separate regional context.
