Celle combines a historic old town with a palace and theatrical history. If you are looking for a hotel in Celle, its various sights give you a good idea of what to focus on during your stay: a walk through the old town, a look at the gardens or a visit to the palace museum. These places and themes can also be explored independently of one another.

Old Town and Gardens

Celle’s old town is a living history book of stone and half-timbered houses. The city centre is home to almost 500 half-timbered houses. Celle Synagogue offers another insight into architectural history: it is considered the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony. The town thus brings together different architectural and historical narratives.

The French Garden is a listed public park dating from the 17th century, south of the historic old town. Its linden avenue forms an east–west axis, with flower beds, lawns and groups of trees on either side. A pond with a fountain completes the scene. The Palace Park offers another green space to explore: it covers just under six and a half hectares. Welf Palace stands on a small island there, surrounded by large old trees and a moat.

Welf Palace, Chapel and Theatre

Over the centuries, Celle Palace developed from a simple castle into the residence of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The four-wing complex features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements on both its exterior and interior. The Residence Museum in Celle Palace explores the history of the residence, the lives and work of the Welf dukes, Queen Caroline Mathilde of Denmark and the history of the Kingdom of Hanover.

The palace chapel is a sight in its own right. With its early Protestant furnishings, it is considered an important example of Renaissance art in northern Germany. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour of Welf Palace. The Celle Palace Theatre offers a different focus: it is Europe’s oldest Baroque theatre with regular performances and has its own acting company. Architecture, the history of the residence and theatre can each be a focus, depending on your interests.

Museums and Jewish Cultural History

One of the two front buildings of the synagogue houses a museum with changing exhibitions on Jewish life in Celle and Jewish cultural history. As the exhibitions change, it is worth checking what is currently on offer before visiting. The Celle Art Museum is closed at night; light art on and behind its glass façade illuminates the building from the outside. This lighting design differs from the historical themes of the old town and palace.

A Walk Through Celle’s Old Town

If you would like to explore the old town on foot, a 3.22-kilometre circular route runs from Celle Ducal Palace to Celle Synagogue. It is described as a very easy walk. You can treat this walk as a separate activity and plan your palace or museum visits independently.
