Unterlüß brings together woodland and heathland landscapes with regional art and cultural history. Its attractions offer a range of experiences: trails lead through beech forests and heathland to a distinctive hilltop; exhibitions focus on kieselguhr, birdlife and art.

Forest, Heath and Trails

The Heidschnuckenweg trail runs directly through Unterlüß. From here, you can set out on selected routes in the cycling and hiking trail network in the Südheide Nature Park; the nearest heathland is a 15-minute walk away. The Lünsholz nature reserve lies about two kilometres east of Unterlüß. It is a deciduous woodland area consisting mainly of structurally diverse beech forests.

Nearby, between Lutterloh and Unterlüß, the Schillohsberg Heath Experience Trail lies in the “Heideflächen Mittleres Lüßplateau” nature reserve in the Südheide Nature Park. This engaging and informative circular trail leads to the “Blaues Auge vom Schillohsberg” viewpoint, which offers a special view of the landscape.

The “Urwald im Lüß” Forest Experience Trail is a family-friendly circular route for an enjoyable half-day excursion through the centuries-old Lüß forest near Unterlüß. The W8 “Der Urwald im Lüß” hiking route leads through the extensive woodland southeast of Unterlüß and along the natural forest reserve to Lüßberg. At 130 metres, this is the highest elevation in the Südheide Nature Park.

From Unterlüß station, you can reach the Forest Experience Trail in about 20 minutes on foot. Bus routes 260 from Hermannsburg and 261 from Faßberg go to the Lüßwald car park. Check the bus timetables for your travel date. The route options include the 2.2-kilometre Schillohsberg circular trail and the approximately 6-kilometre Lüsswald Tour. The latter runs entirely through the Lüsswald near Unterlüß, between Uelzen and Celle.

There is also a specific landscape connection for cycling: the 22-kilometre “Das weiße Gold der Südheide” tour passes through the Südheide Nature Park, across numerous heathland areas and by former kieselguhr mining sites. It offers another perspective on the landscape and its past use.

Culture, Birdlife and Kieselguhr

The Albert König Museum in Unterlüß preserves the artistic estate of painter and graphic artist Albert König (1881–1944). Alongside his works, the museum also displays works by other artists of significance to the region. The permanent exhibition “Kieselgur – Die Erlebnis-ausstellung” explores the natural history and mineral resource kieselguhr. Visitors can listen to first-hand accounts, experiment with various specimens and use a microscope. A special exhibition at the museum also provides information about the formation, discovery and uses of kieselguhr.

Nearby, in the district of Lutterloh, stands the extensively restored Lutterloh Treppenspeicher. This traditional wooden building has a thatched roof and a distinctive exterior staircase; it houses a tourism centre dedicated to the “Vogelwelt der Südheide” (Birdlife of the Südheide). There, you can choose from ten artistic video clips, each five minutes long, on a large monitor. Animated and narrated photos, along with sounds, show birds in their habitats.

Haus Siedenholz is one of the oldest houses in the municipality of Unterlüß and was first mentioned in 1697 as a single-storey forester’s lodge. Today, it offers multi-day, experiential and activity-based educational programmes for school classes and groups of children and young people. As well as forest and heathland trails, the area therefore offers local history and an educational programme for groups as distinct themes.
