Wietze: Discover Oil History and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Wietze
For an introduction to Wietze, there are two main areas to explore: the history of oil production and the river landscape along the Aller and Wietze. The German Oil Museum brings the local industrial history to life, while cycling routes, natural areas and other historical sites complete the picture. You can plan your trip based on whether you are mainly interested in technology and history or trails by the water.
Oil History and Historic Sites
The German Oil Museum is near the town centre and explores Wietze’s history of oil production. Its open-air grounds feature original drilling and production equipment. Much of it can still be put into operation, though the availability of individual installations may vary. If you would like to see a particular installation, it is best to check its availability in advance. At 54 metres tall, Tower 70 on the museum grounds is a Wietze landmark.
The Hunäus drilling site is another historic stop: it is considered one of the world’s first successful oil wells. The original drilling site near the town centre was reconstructed for its 150th anniversary, and a large information board tells visitors about the location. Wietze’s Oil Mountain was formed from spoil excavated from Wietze’s oil shaft. At 41.5 metres high, it offers views of the surrounding landscape.
The Stechinelli Chapel in Wieckenberg offers a different historical perspective. Built in 1692, it has a well-preserved Baroque interior. Together with the drilling site, it shows that Wietze’s history is about more than oil production.
Trails, Poetry and River Landscapes
The Aller Cycle Route passes through the river landscape around Wietze. Along the Poetry Trail, changing poems are displayed beside the cycle route; the stops are intended for walkers and cyclists. The German Oil Museum is also located on several tourist cycling and themed routes, including the Aller Cycle Route, the Kaliroute, the Postmeister Route and the Hanover Cultural Route.
At the rest area on the Aller Cycle Route by the mouth of the Wietze, you’ll find a wooden model of Wietze’s oil derrick and a sheltered place to take a break. From there, you can look out over the Aller, the Wietze and the neighbouring meadows. The river areas are also ecologically important: alluvial forests along the Wietze and Aller provide a habitat for rare birds such as the kingfisher.
Part of the Hornbosteler Hutweide is grazed year-round by Przewalski’s horses and Heck cattle. Grazing arrangements may change over time. The pasture therefore combines a natural area with a distinctive form of landscape management, while the museum and drilling site highlight the region’s industrial history.
Plan Activities and Your Journey
Allerhorn offers canoes and kayaks for hourly or daily hire if you’d like to explore the Aller. Check availability with the provider before your trip. The surrounding region is also home to Lower Saxony’s only gold-panning camp, which offers guided gold panning. If you plan to try it, check in advance whether it is operating and how to access it.
You can reach the German Oil Museum by car from the Schwarmstedt exit on the A7 via the B214 in about ten minutes; actual journey times depend on traffic. From Celle, bus 800 takes about 40 minutes to Wietze. From there, it’s around a 15-minute walk to the museum. Check journey times and routes before travelling.
The Celle destination has ten signposted themed cycling routes in the Südheide Nature Park, with a combined length of more than 400 kilometres. They lead to notable attractions and pass through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moorland and pond landscapes. The area also has 23 themed walking trails, five discovery trails and three long-distance hiking trails. These routes complement Wietze’s own cycling and river landscapes as part of the Celle destination.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Wietze, you can make your choice based on your planned focus: the oil museum and industrial history, or trails and nature by the water. Compare the location and listed amenities for each specific offer.
