Friesoythe can be explored through several different destinations: the tree discovery trail runs right through the town, the Stadtpark is also located in the heart of Friesoythe, and one of the cycling routes described here starts at the park. There is also the “Soestetal” canoe trail between Soesteheim and Stadtpark. You can tailor your stay to your interests—for example, trees and parkland, art and history, or an activity on the water.

Stadtpark on the Soeste

Friesoythe’s Stadtpark, covering around ten hectares, was laid out along the Soeste on former swamp woodland. It is an oasis of calm in the heart of Friesoythe. The park features iron sculptures at 15 stations along the Iron Cross Way. The bell tower is also home to the Friesoythe Peace Bell, which is more than 400 years old. The parkland, art stations, and bell give the site several distinct points of interest.

Tree discovery trail in the heart of Friesoythe

The tree discovery trail runs for about five kilometres past 14 typical deciduous trees. Its location in the heart of the town sets it apart from an excursion focused entirely on the countryside outside town. The clearly defined route and typical deciduous trees give the trail a specific nature theme. If you are exploring Friesoythe, you can make it a focus of its own alongside the Stadtpark and the water-based activities.

Canoeing on the Soeste

The “Soestetal” canoe trail runs for around three kilometres through natural surroundings between Soesteheim and Stadtpark. It offers the chance to try canoeing, and Soesteheim is the stated starting point. Canoe rental is available by prior arrangement. If you plan this activity, arrange the rental in advance. The canoe trail and the tree discovery trail differ not only in theme but also in length: around three kilometres along the waterway compared with about five kilometres on the tree discovery trail.

Cycling routes to Bösel and Thüle

Two routes with different sequences of places are described for a cycling excursion. “Between Friesoythe and Thüle” starts at Friesoythe’s Stadtpark and continues via Altenoythe to Bösel. The “On Old Paths” tour connects Friesoythe, Bösel, and Mittelsten Thüle. The places mentioned help distinguish the two route descriptions and choose a route based on the destinations that interest you. Check current route conditions before setting off.
