Hemmoor: Discover Nature, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Hemmoor
Hemmoor combines open landscapes with birdwatching, industrial history, culture and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hemmoor, these different highlights can help you plan your stay around your interests. The Oste, the Ostedeich, broad meadows and fields are part of the local landscape, as are themed trails and Lake Kreide. Each destination has its own focus: nature watching, the former cement industry, geological history or exhibitions.
Landscape and birdwatching
The six-metre-high observation tower in the Hemmoor Moor Meadows overlooks a breeding area of around 30 hectares. From the observation station, you can see meadow pipits, lapwings, geese, migratory birds and storks in their natural habitat. The tower and breeding area give birdwatching a tangible connection to Hemmoor’s open landscapes. This nature-focused highlight differs from the trails, which mainly explore Hemmoor’s industrial history or present local topics.
Themed trails and history
The Cement Experience Trail is a themed route for pedestrians and cyclists on the site of the former cement factory. Information boards and exhibits explain Hemmoor’s former cement industry and local wildlife and plant life. The trail thus brings together two perspectives: the site’s industrial history and the nature that is also part of it.
The Hemmoor Spheres take you back to a much earlier geological era. They formed during the Hemmoorium, a geological stage that dates back 17 to 21 million years. While the Cement Experience Trail connects with the former industry, the Hemmoorium points to the history of the Earth. Both topics give your stay a local connection, but they span different timescales.
The Historic Oste Dyke Route runs from Belum to Hechthausen and has more than 65 information stations. Its regional route differs from the Cement Experience Trail on the former factory site. When choosing between the two, you can consider their format: a themed trail on a former industrial site, or a route connecting two places and featuring numerous stations.
Kulturdiele and changing exhibitions
Kulturdiele Hemmoor is a Lower Saxon half-timbered house with a 150-square-metre hall and an exhibition room. It hosts changing exhibitions on art and history related to Hemmoor. The programme changes, so if a particular exhibition is important to your stay, check what is currently on display beforehand. The hall and exhibition room serve different purposes, while the changing themes explore Hemmoor’s connections to art and history.
Lake Kreide and outdoor activities
Lake Kreide Hemmoor is a 33-hectare lake with a diving centre. This gives you the option of a place with a clear focus on diving, alongside nature and culture.
The Hemmoor fitness trail and circular walking route offer a different kind of activity. The fitness trail has ten exercise stations, some of which are accessible to people with reduced mobility. The route is designed for cycling. The fitness trail is free of charge and open to everyone; check these details before your visit. Unlike the interpretive themed trails, the focus here is on the exercise stations and the route designed for cyclists.
In the wider Cuxhaven destination
In the wider Cuxhaven destination, the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Cuxhaven offers a focus of its own. Its exhibition spans three floors and covers the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the Cuxhaven coastal heaths. On the centre’s nature tours, you can experience mudflats, salt marshes, geest cliffs and coastal heathland. The exhibition and tours are part of the wider Cuxhaven destination and form a separate area of interest alongside Hemmoor’s local attractions.
