Dorumer Neufeld brings together a variety of themes to help you plan your trip: the fishing harbour, Obereversand Lighthouse, the Wadden Sea and walks through the town. The experiences described also include an exhibition and a seasonal swimming facility. This gives you the choice of whether to focus your stay on harbour life, nature, walks around the town or culture.

Lighthouse and fishing harbour

The historic Obereversand Lighthouse is 37.40 metres high and stands at the entrance to the harbour at Dorum-Neufeld. From its observation platform, the view stretches far across the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. On guided tours, you can learn about the lives and working conditions of lighthouse keepers in the late 19th century. The view and the history of lighthouse operations offer two different ways to explore the area.

At the fishing harbour, you can watch cutters return to their home port or set off on their next fishing trip on many days of the year. There are various food stalls where you can take a break, as well as a harbour terrace serving fish sandwiches in a maritime setting. Individual vendors may change. This lets you combine fishing and a bite to eat at the harbour without having to plan your visit around a particular return or departure.

Experience and understand the Wadden Sea

The Wurster Nordseeküste National Park House in Dorum-Neufeld features a modern, multimedia exhibition about the Wadden Sea. Large aquariums, a tidal model and informative display panels cover a range of topics. The centre is on a mound in front of the dike, right beside the open mudflats and close to an important high-tide roosting site for birds. Both the exhibition and its location highlight different aspects of the Wadden Sea: its habitats and the changing tides.

The National Park House also offers mudflat walks, salt marsh and bird excursions, dike walks and aquarium feeding sessions. If a particular activity is important to your plans, check its dates before travelling. That way, you can compare your expectations with the scheduled programme.

Two walks with different character

The Dorfweg is a short, signposted circular route through Dorum-Neufeld, designed to help you get to know the town. It is paved throughout, has no inclines and offers plenty of places to sit along the way. The route is suitable for wheelchair users. For a walk around the town, its route, surface and seating are useful points of reference.

The Sturmweg starts and ends at the fishing harbour. It crosses the dike straight to the water’s edge at the beach, then makes a short detour around the fishing harbour basin to Obereversand Lighthouse. Unlike the Dorfweg, it links the harbour, dike, beach and lighthouse. Conditions on the dike and beach can change with the weather and tides, so check conditions before setting out. After severe weather, you should also check the condition of the Dorfweg locally.

Swimming in the main season

During the main season, Watt’n Bad offers an outdoor wave pool, indoor and outdoor children’s pools, and four slides. There is also an outdoor relaxation pool, bubble seats and massage jets in the indoor pool. Facilities include step-free access and a view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wadden Sea. The seasonal opening is important when planning a swim; the pools and slides described also give you a clear idea of what Watt’n Bad has to offer.

Wurster Nordseeküste: more cultural destinations

The wider Wurster Nordseeküste destination also has its own cultural attractions in various locations. In Spieka, the origins of St. George’s Church date back to 1319. Cappel’s St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church is known for its 17th-century organ by Arp Schnitger. The two churches offer different points of connection with the past.

In Wremen, the Curiosity Shell Museum displays more than 3,000 shells and snail shells from around the world. The exhibits are not organised into scientific categories; instead, they are given names inspired by playful wordplay and the variety of their shapes. Midlum is home to the Midlum Mill, a gallery-type Dutch windmill and one of the few of its kind in Cuxhaven district still in working order. The Meinecke miller family built it in 1857, with two grain-crushing mechanisms and a roller mill. Baking days and events are regularly held at the mill; check the latest dates before visiting.
