Schiffdorf offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: cycling, activities on the Geeste, nature watching and historic cultural sites. Options include three suggested cycling routes, an opportunity to go canoeing, a wetland where you can watch birds and recreational facilities at Silbersee. For planning purposes, these highlights can be considered separately: some focus on landscapes and wildlife, others on outdoor activities or architectural history.

Cycling routes and activities on the water

The municipal cycling map suggests three routes, each approximately 30 kilometres long. As the suggested routes are similar in length, you can think of them as three options for a comparable ride. The Geeste flows through the municipality of Schiffdorf. An extended canoe tour is possible on the river; the Schiffdorf weir lock is a starting point for canoe trips on the Geeste. Fishing is also offered as a visitor activity in Schiffdorf. Cycling, paddling and fishing are therefore available as separate options, without necessarily forming part of one combined route.

Watch wildlife and enjoy Silbersee

In Bramel, Polder Bramel is a wetland of approximately 150 hectares and a breeding and resting site for numerous rare birds. An observation tower makes it possible to watch birds in the polder. Conditions for birdlife can change over the course of the year, so this natural area offers a different focus from an outing geared primarily towards recreational activities.

Near Wehdel, Silbersee lies within the Silbersee and Laaschmoor nature reserve. Part of the lake is open for swimming, subject to local safety conditions. Visitors also have access to a beach volleyball court, a football pitch and a playground. Camping is available at the Silbersee recreational area near Wehdel. The facilities differ from the observation tower in Bramel: here, a natural setting combines with a range of recreational activities. Before travelling, check local conditions for swimming access and facilities, as well as the availability of camping.

Cultural sites and views

In Altluneberg, the restored Oldenburger Haus is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century where cultural events are held. Schiffdorf Mill is a Dutch-style gallery windmill, built in 1864. The two buildings represent different historical architectural styles. This makes it possible to combine a focus on nature or outdoor activities with a look at Schiffdorf’s architectural history.

Another landmark is the Schiffdorf weir lock. From the bridge above the lock, you can look out over the Geeste and the settlement of Spaden to the north. The visibility of both may depend on the prevailing conditions. The viewpoint adds a perspective on the river and settlement to the opportunity to go canoeing at the weir lock.

Cuxhaven as a broader regional context

The wider destination of Cuxhaven also has its own nature and cultural attractions. The UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Cuxhaven has three exhibition floors showcasing information about the Wadden Sea World Natural Heritage Site and the Cuxhaven coastal heathlands. On the centre’s nature tours, you can experience mudflats, salt marsh, Geest cliffs and coastal heathland. These attractions belong to the destination of Cuxhaven and provide an additional regional context for Schiffdorf’s attractions.
