Wremen: North Sea Green Beach and Maritime History
Accommodation in Wremen
Wremen combines a North Sea green beach with a rich maritime history. Different priorities may matter when searching for a hotel: the Wadden Sea by the dike, fishing at the harbour, views of the Weser estuary or walks through the town. The places below show what makes Wremen a distinctive travel destination.
Beach, mudflats and Weser estuary
Wremen Beach is a North Sea green beach bathing area directly by the dike, in front of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Families particularly appreciate its shallow water. Guided mudflat walks offer the chance to experience the Wadden Sea mudflats. The “Kleiner Preuße” lighthouse offers excellent views of the Weser estuary. Coastal highlights range from the green beach and mudflats to views of the Weser estuary.
Fishing harbour and fishing history
The harbour and fishing history are also defining features of Wremen. Wremen’s fishing harbour is the oldest and southernmost fishing harbour on the Wurster coast. The Museum of Wadden Sea Fishing showcases the history and conditions of fishing along the North Sea coast. Its centrepiece is the “MS Koralle”, which visitors can view on land. The harbour and museum offer different points of interest: one focuses on the fishing harbour, the other on fishing history and a specific vessel.
The shrimp trawler “Claudia” offers another perspective. Converted for guest trips, the vessel runs excursions to the container quay in Bremerhaven as well as fishing trips. If you are considering one of these trips, check availability before travelling. St. Willehadi Church in Wremen is the largest and oldest church in the Wurster Land. It adds the church history of the Wurster Land to the maritime themes.
Explore Wremen on foot
Two signposted routes with different itineraries are available for exploring on foot. The village trail is a circular route through maritime Wremen that is suitable for beginners. It is a good option if you are looking for a walk around the town. The Storm Trail leads from the visitor centre along the fishing harbour to the “Kleiner Preuße” lighthouse at the entrance to Wremen harbour. When choosing, you can consider the route type: a loop through Wremen or a trail featuring the harbour and ending at the lighthouse.
Regional cultural context
The wider travel destination of Wurster North Sea Coast also offers a church-history perspective. The origins of St. George’s Church in Spieka date back to 1319. St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Cappel is known for its 17th-century organ, made by Arp Schnitger. This broadens the cultural context to include church and organ history at these locations along the Wurster North Sea Coast. The wider travel destination of Wurster North Sea Coast is also home to the Curious Shell Museum in Wremen, which displays more than 3,000 shells and snail shells from around the world. Instead of scientific categories, the exhibits have names inspired by wordplay and the variety of their shapes.
