If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Diepholz, you can plan around the interests you want to shape your days: castle history, urban culture or outdoor activities. Diepholz is located in the Dümmer Nature Park and is a cultural center of the DümmerWeserLand region. Its cultural offerings include theater, cinema, a museum, a gallery and a media library. Events may change; if you have a specific event in mind, check the current program.

Castle History and the Cityscape

Diepholz Castle is a moated castle whose origins date back to the 10th or 11th century. The 43-meter-high castle tower is the city’s tallest building and a landmark of Diepholz and the surrounding area. The Museum in the Castle Tower has exhibitions on local history and working life spread over seven floors; one focus is peat extraction in the local moors. Construction work may affect museum visits, so check current access arrangements before your visit. The castle island, with its rose garden and stele trail, is open year-round; access to the tower may differ.

Culture and City Walks

The sculptures at Gänsemarkt are freely accessible year-round. The Grafentour is a signposted walking tour of Diepholz; follow the signs on site. The Diepholz City Theater has 541 seats. If you are planning to attend a performance, check the current schedule, as the program changes. This lets you choose your own cultural focus, whether that means exhibitions on local history or a specific event.

Outdoor Activities

There are various ways to get active on foot or on the water: the Grafentour is a signposted city walk, while a canoe trip takes you along the water from Lembruch to Diepholz. Before setting out, check availability with the provider and check water conditions. Müntepark outdoor swimming pool is open seasonally. Its facilities include a 50-meter pool, a solar-heated non-swimmer pool with a slide, diving platforms, beach volleyball, table tennis and a playground. Check current opening hours before your trip. A cycle route node network in the district of Diepholz was officially launched in April 2025.

In the Wider Diepholz Destination

The district of Diepholz includes two tourism regions and two nature parks. In the Diepholz Moor, a roughly two-kilometer-long moor discovery trail with ten informative stops leads through the moor ecosystem and makes it accessible in every season. In Wagenfeld, Moorwelten uses multimedia to explore the themes of moors and climate. The moor railway stops directly at Moorwelten and takes visitors to the “Moorpadd” nature discovery trail and the hiking trails in Neustädter Moor.

The cultural offerings in the district include the Dümmer Museum in Lembruch. Its “Life in the Water” research station provides a detailed explanation of the ecology of the Dümmer ecosystem. The museum presents the nature, landscape and culture of Lake Dümmer in the past, present and future. The Stone Age at Dümmer is brought to life through original artifacts dating from 4,000 to 2,000 BC and reconstructions. This gives the museum a different thematic focus from the Museum in the Castle Tower, which focuses on Diepholz’s local history, working life and peat extraction.
