Sulingen – Forests, Water and Half-Timbered Houses
Accommodation in Sulingen
Forests and walking trails, a town lake, half-timbered houses and culture shape the range of things to explore during a stay in Sulingen. Depending on your travel plans, you can focus on nature experiences and the town’s history, or combine the two. Guided cycling tours are also part of the town’s seasonal offering.
Forests and Trails in Sulingen
The Rathloser Gehege is Sulingen’s largest contiguous forest area. It has a forest discovery trail with small signs explaining activities at each stop. The route is shaped not only by the forest but also by the activities along the way. If you would like to combine a hike with a specific nature theme, this is a good starting point for planning your day.
The 6.5-hectare town lake is a starting point for a walk through MĂĽhlenhof Park and the northern Suletal valley with its mill pond. The Suletal valley near Sulingen is a nature reserve. The route there passes historic buildings, and the area is only a few minutes away. The town lake and the Suletal valley thus offer two different points of reference for a walk: the lake as a starting point and the protected valley as a destination.
Generationen Park has a water playground with slides and a BMX cycling course. These facilities add more ways to spend time outdoors alongside the nature trails and walking routes. You can choose which stops to include in your stay according to your own interests.
Half-Timbered Houses and Town History
The Alte Bürgermeisterei is one of Sulingen’s oldest half-timbered houses. It was built around 1730, shortly after the great fire of 1719. The upper floor houses an exhibition on the town’s history. St. Nicolai Church combines a long history with a later appearance: it dates back to 1200 and took on its current Neo-Gothic form in the 19th century. Half-timbered houses around the church shape the townscape.
You can also discover the history of half-timbered houses at Meierdamm: the house there is Sulingen’s oldest half-timbered house. Art exhibitions are regularly held inside. At the town lake, the Sulingen Local History Association Museum presents an exhibition on how people used to live and work in the Sulinger Land. It also hosts special exhibitions on different topics that change monthly. The exhibitions focus on a range of subjects, from events in the town and architectural history to everyday life and work in the region.
Sulingen Town Theatre offers a programme of contemporary and classical plays, music, comedy and cabaret. The Sulingen Cultural Association (Kulturverein Sulingen e.V.) is a regular guest at St. Nicolai Church between Christmas and New Year, with the reading “Höret gut zu!” and the “Konzert zwischen den Jahren.” If you are planning your stay around one of these cultural events, check the dates in advance.
Seasonal Tours and the Wider Region
Guided public cycling tours are offered in Sulingen from April to October. As the offering is seasonal, it is a good idea to check the current tour dates before your trip. This will help you decide whether a guided tour fits your travel dates. The forest trails and walking routes offer a different focus, centring on the landscape and the stops described along the way.
The wider destination of Diepholz offers other nature and culture experiences that are not among Sulingen’s attractions. The Diepholz district comprises two tourism regions and two nature parks. In the Diepholz Moor, a roughly two-kilometre-long moor discovery trail with ten informative stops leads through the moor ecosystem; it is described as an experience for every season. A district-wide cycling signposting system guides recreational cyclists along around 1,700 kilometres of routes. This information offers an additional perspective on Diepholz as a wider destination, regardless of which places in Sulingen you visit.
