On Langeoog, long stretches of beach, dunes and the Wadden Sea meet places where you can explore the island’s natural and cultural history. The 14-kilometre-long sandy beach and dunes up to 20 metres high give a sense of the scale of this coastal landscape. There are also protected habitats, routes for observing nature and museums that offer different perspectives on life in the past. When comparing hotels on Langeoog, you can plan your stay around the aspects of the island that interest you most: landscapes, outdoor activities or culture.

The Wadden Sea, dunes and views

Langeoog’s natural landscape is protected by the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2009. The Flinthörn protected area lies in the southwest of the island. There, salt marshes, tidal flats and dunes meet to form an ecosystem with rare plant and animal species. This combination makes Flinthörn a distinctive natural area on the island, where salt marsh, tidal flats and dunes lie side by side.

The water tower offers panoramic views across Langeoog, the North Sea and the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The view takes in the island, the sea and the Wadden Sea. The beach, dunes, protected area and viewing point each offer a different perspective; together, they give an impression of the landscapes that define Langeoog.

Experience nature: guided walks, on foot or by bike

Guided mudflat walks give visitors the chance to experience the UNESCO Wadden Sea World Heritage Site up close. Another way to explore the area is the nature trail with its shelter at Osterhook: it leads through Langeoog’s unspoilt natural environment and offers information and views for observing birds and the mudflats. The two activities take different forms: a guided mudflat walk on the one hand, and a nature trail with opportunities for observation on the other.

Exploring by bike is another option: you can cycle through Langeoog’s dunes and salt marshes. On the island, you can get around without cars, either on foot or by bike. This means that exploring the island centres on routes for walking and cycling; for observing nature, you can also join a guided mudflat walk or follow the nature trail at Osterhook.

Museums and island history

The Seemannshus local history museum is housed in an original 19th-century fisherman’s house. It shows how people used to live and work on Langeoog. The historic building and its subject bring together a particular place and the island’s everyday history.

The Altes Wasserwerk information centre features historical exhibits and insights into the regional energy transition. It provides information about coastal, nature and water protection, the island’s flora and fauna, and historical background. The information centre also includes a multimedia experience, interactive stations designed especially for children, and a skill game for all ages. Its exhibits and activities are suitable for families, school groups, hikers and anyone interested in water, coastal and environmental topics.

On the beach promenade, the Lale Andersen memorial commemorates the singer of “Lili Marleen” and her close connection to Langeoog. Alongside nature and everyday history, it also brings into view someone whose life story is linked to the island.

Getting there and getting around

Getting to Langeoog involves taking a ferry from the mainland. At the harbour, the island railway takes passengers to the station. When planning your journey, keep the sequence of these two legs in mind, and check the ferry timetable before you set off. On the island, you can get around without cars, either on foot or by bike. Getting to the island and travelling around it are separate parts of your trip planning.
